5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I just finished Dinner--It was Friday night Tacos!

There is not much you can do now but see how they hatch and on what day. There is nice development in the eggs so you may not be as far off as you think.

If the temperature was too low, the will hatch late so I would not put them into lockdown until day 19 unless you see pips. Watch them for sticking and egg goo.

My guess is that the temp was not as low as you think.

I think this is what's going on with me... Temp too low, hatching late...

Yum tacos! We did Chinese tonight.

I think I'm getting sick, Oh no, I went over to my BF's sisters house on Christmas and her husband was spreading the holiday sickness like we all wanted it for a gift....Now I can't stop coughing, that is what he had and I have to work on new years eve and new years day (actually signed up to work double time and holiday pay for both days, can't pass that up)

Ohh nooo! I am so sorry to hear this. I was sick the day before Christmas, then better at least on Christmas day..tummy thing..then sick again after Christmas, now feeling better again..hoping this better sticks around. The cough you have has been going around here, my DH had if forever, yes, sorry, a long time. We are getting too old for this stuff. We stay home a lot in the winter. :/

Thanks for advertising for her I was excited to see this, I just ordered 2. She says because of this post today her inbox is flooded with orders. Good job helping her out. This water bottle looks great, a very cool idea that she has here. I cant wait to try it out!

LOL..I thought that may happen. I pm'd her letting her know what may be coming her way. Glad it is working out for her, now for her and her hubby to get to work! Ha... :) :)

Hello, I am quietly reading along but I'm still here. I did the 6-hour cool-off thing today and it made me really nervous, but it's over now. I hope I didn't sabotage anything. I set the Thermostat to 24 degr Celcius like that study pdf. said, but it never went lower than 26*C due to the temperature in the house.

Is anyone else doing the day 16 6-hour cool down?
WUT?

I candled..and I swear, that I have two that are internally pipped! Lock down tomorrow for me. :) I may get some early birds.

I'm no expert on it but what I read earlier in the thread is that it helps them from over heating. After they are so old and close to hatching the are making they're own heat so cooling down the bator lets some of the heat ease off them and keep from over heating.
WUT? Momma hens not off the nest for 6 hrs...I know I got two now,,,

I've always wondered the same thing. The short answer is that many years of trial and error have shown this is the best way to do it. It is so hard to replicate nature.
A certain amount of moisture loss needs to happen. A certain amount of humidity needs to be present to prevent chicks from getting stuck.
Aren't broody hens amazing?
AMEN,,THAT right there say it all <> REPLICATE WE TRY>>>PEACE<<<

Isn't that such a shock?? Last years Easter Hatch-A-Long, I had 1 that hatched before I put them in lockdown!! Poor thing was all alone for 2 days, and then by the time the others hatched, too independent and mean to integrate! I had to put the bugger in an older batch, that straightened his butt right out!

I just moved mine into the hatcher late last night, and I have 5 (YES, FIVE!) pips tonight! I heard one chirping, and once I started looking, there they were! I'm going to bed now, and in the morning, I may have babies!!

I got a call from the local petting zoo today. They wondered if I could provide them some chicks just before Easter.............
