5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Shipped eggs are a challenge, whether you are new or old to hatching. This clutch I have due to hatch on Wednesday started as 14 eggs, I dropped one in the incubator on to another, down to 12, on day 10 only had 3 develop and I'm happy with it. Will be really happy if all hatch. I have only had one really good hatch from shipped eggs and that was from DMrippy great eggs, got 14 set under a broody EE and she hatched out 12 of them and raised them until they were 12 weeks old. Broodys are the best with shipped eggs

How many of you live in very cold areas? What are your plans for the chicks?

Cold here...it never got above freezing and had a wind chill into the teens all day. I keep them in the house at first, and then they go into the garage at 3-4 weeks or so and they live there until they are fully feathered in then out they go. I have a couple very nice roosters who are good enough to look after all youngsters and keep them warm in my unheated coops.

I have considered keeping them in the basement, but a) hubby would have a fit, b) chicken dust is bad for sewing machines, and my sewing room is downstairs, and c) the cats sleep in the basement and would probably torment chicks by staring nonstop at them.

ETA: I am only going to set a few, just to see how my young flock's hatchability is looking.
