5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Well I don't think my house is set up to hatch in winter I'm having trouble holding a steady temp in my genn 1588 atm. I have an older drafty house so I set bator up in a room that my daughter walks through only in morning and night, with closed doors. But that's going to stop as she will go through my bedroom. I was running a radiator style heater but changed to a forced air one last night. Last night was low today high lowered set point down some. Anyone else with a gen1588 notice the temp never gets to the temp setting? I set it for 102.0 highest it reads is 101.7 on the gage built into bator but the heat light cuts off and the temp will flex 101.2-101.7 never reaching the 102 it's set for. I turned it on yesterday morning and I noticed these flexes last night and even today never gets to where its set always .2-6 under where it's set.

I've also put a towl under it to keep cold from wood table top off bottom of it some more. And I put a pot of water in front of the heater to emit some humidity and radiate some heat when it's cycling off at temp.
Put it in a closet. 99.8 to 100*

Brookhaven, that is the best explaination I have heard. The question of what is day one has been long debated and I think your explaination comes closest to putting it to rest. Ron, what do you think of putting a quote on page 1?

Thanks. When I first started hatching I was so confused with the "Day 1" debate so I started doing my own research. Seeing the question posted over and over I broke it down into terms that I think everyone can understand.

The Hovabator 1588 should be set at 99.9 not 102, that is too hot.
Couldn't get it to hold a 99.5 at setting 101 moved it up .5 until it got up there and seemed to hold. When I got home it was colder in house even room with the heater it was flexing under 99.5 so I turned it up alittle more to 102.0 and changed types of heaters. Today it was high so I turned it down but house in general was hotter also. Seems I'm chasing the out side and house temp with it atm. I just rechecked at 101.0 it's sitting at 99.3 so bumped to 101.2 check back in a few hours.

Do we have to wait until tomorrow? Cant we just set them now?!!! LOL
This is my first time ever hatching eggs.
I just got my Brinsea Mini Advance Wednesday.
Set it up. Warmed up faster than a hen could lay an egg.
Got the hygrometer set up.
Just got the eggs yesterday.
They were cold but not frozen. They were shipped to me. Will they be ok? How cold is too cold before they are no good?
Now i just want to put in them in the bator.
Tonight I will be checking for detached air cells. Have them in a carton waiting......
I am not patient.
They should be fine!

Quote: The more you mess with it the harder it will be to maintain the temp. Put it in a closet or a room that isn't used that often. Get the temp to 99.5 to 100.5 and leave it be. It won't matter what the temp in the room (not freezing cold though) is it will heat itself to those temps. make sure your thermometer is operating right.

Sadly no closet in this house that has a door. This old farm house has like 3 closets total in it. Best I could do was a room like 8x10ft or so with two closed doors but plaster falling off wall where kids picked the wall apart in some spots. That's where I have it atm with the heater in there set for 70 and sitting on the floor so bator 2 feet higher on table should be 70+ around it on out side. May bump heater up to 75 if I cant get it to hold temp at night.

99.5 at egg level. I do have to set mine to 102 to get it to 99.5 at egg level. The Genesis is fan forced so there is not a top and bottom temperature to work with. Some of the new style ones with the controls on the top have trouble getting the temp correct. GQF is aware of the problem and they should send you a new top for your incubator.

If you can keep the room above 60 you should be fine.
