5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I just want to thank all who have posted such valuable information about hatching. My DH called me yesterday to tell me he thinks my eggs are not hatching well because all my thermometers are off. He has this little laser temp reader thingamabob that he pointed at the eggs in the incubators and hatcher, and despite thermometers that read just a tick under 100 degrees, the eggs are in the 103-112 degree range. They aren't el cheapo thermometers, they are the thermometer hygrometer type for reptiles, regular price ~$18, I got them for $10 each on sale, so maybe now I know why they were on sale. I am bummed. I went home and put my meat thermometer through a vent hole in each one and adjusted temps and will see if it helps. My new Brinsea should arrive today or tomorrow, and I am going to try and get it to temp to use, will be setting a few hours late but I've heard such great things about it I want to use it for this hatch. Have a dozen of my friend's barnyard mix eggs, should have at least a dozen Silkie eggs from my own girls, and going to pick up a couple dozen from a local with a large layer flock (30 hens, 3 cocks).

My pet chic eggs not coming till spring now.... Due to weather ... I was offered they'll double my order at no extra charge. Has anyone used my pet chix eggs before
I ordered my eggs from mypetchicken as well and they're supposed to come this week but now I'm realizing I've never gotten any e-mails from them at all! How were you informed the eggs wouldn't come till spring? I'm in Colorado and it's been in the single digits lately so I wonder if this would apply to me as well.

Exactly!

Wisher found that out last year. Temperature is so critical that 1/2 of a degree over 21 days and cause problems.

My brinsea is spot on for temps.

Well, I'm 350 post's behind, and can't promise I'll be able to catch up.

I am super excited to finally have gotten my eggs for the hatch-a-long! Thank You MsLadyHawke & Blarneyeggs!! From MsLadyHawke I got 9 Barred Hollands & 3 huge white mystery eggs, and from Blarney 6 super dark gorgeous Marans

!! I am sooo happy!

The flash on the camera is doing the Marans eggs no justice, they are much darker than this!

I have eggs!! I was horribly disappointed this morning because I checked the tracking and it still hadn't updated. But I went to the PO to check anyway just in case, and there they sat waiting for me!! They look perfect. It doesn't "appear" as if they froze. There are no visible cracks and there is no leaking or weeping anywhere on any of them. I really hope they didn't form any ice crystals inside to kill the embryo.

Here they are.

I'll be picking up the Lav Orp eggs today at 1 o'clock.

Get an air duster and carefully clean the sensor in the control unit.

Take out the plug.

I took canned air and cleaned the top this time before hatch. Will take out the plug. So far at 101.1 setting my thermometer inside is reading 99.5. I cant wait for payday to order my spot check.

I Soooooooo feel like I'm working with an old tv set where you have to hold your left leg up, right hand squeezing left ear balancing on top of table trying to watch tv while holding the antenna at the right angle.
