5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

okay! I'll be checking the temp to, comparing what the display says abd what my extra thermometer says. I just want to see which trough i need to get the right humidity. as well as making sure my incubator is in a good place
@mstricer I'm a first time hatcher!
I'm not an expert but have used 3 different incubators so IMO, start with one trough full.
Also keep in mind, surface area makes humidity, not volume. And ambient humidity makes a difference too. Just food for thought as you go through this.

You can list them on craigslist or here on BYC in the buy sell trade section. Or mention what you have available on your states thread also here on BYC. You can rehome chicks as day olds or older its your choice. I personally wouldn't go through the trouble of raising chicks up until they were sexable and off heat and then give them away for free. That is a lot of your time taken up and money in the form of feed and the heat lamp on your electric bill. Typically sexed females off heat sell for a little more money. But that is just my opinion. I have also given away some animals but I was ok with that decision I didn't feel pressured into doing it. What kind of chicks do you have available?

I have 2 silver lace Cochins hatch 11/23 then I have 2 tiny Malaysian serama that hatch on thanksgiving And I just hatch 5 silkies i just gave a grey one away yesterday and I think iam going keep the 4. I think my friend mike thinks I have a problem and maybe I do

EGGS!!!!

I have eggs!! I was horribly disappointed this morning because I checked the tracking and it still hadn't updated. But I went to the PO to check anyway just in case, and there they sat waiting for me!! They look perfect. It doesn't "appear" as if they froze. There are no visible cracks and there is no leaking or weeping anywhere on any of them. I really hope they didn't form any ice crystals inside to kill the embryo.

Here they are.

I'll be picking up the Lav Orp eggs today at 1 o'clock.

They do look good. Good luck. You will know soon if they are doing well. I am trying to decide if I should set mine today..got them yesterday.

Hey Ron, would it be ok if I wait until noon tomorrow..one more day of the eggs sitting? I haven't ever done that long a wait before.

A problem? Of course we do, so what's the problem?

Just look at the right column and see how many people are monitoring the thread as I type this.

For the thermometer accuracy, first calibrate them. Then use several to check the temperature and then average the readings.

Or buy a Brinsea Spot check.

A very accurate, easily read incubator thermometer specifically designed for incubation with a range of 32° - 40°C (90º to 104ºF).
Ten times more accurate than most digital thermometers, it reads to 0.1ºF with an accuracy of ± 0.2ºF. Switchable between ºF and ºC.
The remote probe on an 18" cord fits through ventilation holes of the incubator or brooder so that the thermometer can be left outside the unit for easy reading.
Battery life is about 6 weeks in continuous use, but very much longer if switched on just as required.

If I had the space I would have taken the cochins off your hands. But I am out of room until I build another coop come spring.
