5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

For the thermeter accuracy, first calibrate them. Then use several to check the temperature and then average the readings.

Or buy a Brinsea Spot check.

A very accurate, easily read incubator thermometer specifically designed for incubation with a range of 32° - 40°C (90º to 104ºF).
Ten times more accurate than most digital thermometers, it reads to 0.1ºF with an accuracy of ± 0.2ºF. Switchable between ºF and ºC.
The remote probe on an 18" cord fits through ventilation holes of the incubator or brooder so that the thermometer can be left outside the unit for easy reading.
Battery life is about 6 weeks in continuous use, but very much longer if switched on just as required.

I got a.thermometer at Wal-Mart but I'm thinking I need a reptile one. or something. the one i got is calibrated and so far.its about 5 degrees below the digital reading on the display. I looked at the spot check but I want to get one that I won't have to wait for shipping. any suggestions on a thermometer i can get from Wal-Mart or a pet store?

Good point on shipping speed. Brinsea is in Florida.

Incubator warehouse has fairly accurate ones--pick faster shipping.

Get the incubator as close as possible, set the eggs and wait to get an incubator thermometer. They really do make a difference.

Me Too! My family says I'm on the computer all day, and I say leaving tabs open and stopping by every 15 minutes to check in doesn't count!

I've bought thermometers from every store you can imagine as well as incubator companies - digital, glass, etc..
I hate them all. My best luck thus far has been meat probe type thermometers you can stick in the holes.
Thanks to Ron's suggestion, I'm going to compare them to an oral thermometer. That's a brilliant idea because 98.6 is so close to incubator temp. I had a thermometer from an incubator company that was accurate at a low temp but was 4 degrees off at 99.
I found this place.

For $19 they have a fast read accurate to 0.9 degrees and can be calibrated. I'll compare it to an oral and calibrate.
That's the same place I'm getting the high/low audible alarm thermometer with 2 channels.

I really need to get off of the computer and go to the store, I also have to go to Meyer hatchery and get a bottom to my incubator, for some reason I don't understand it has so stains that are freaking me out, I keep thinking mold and don't want to kill my babies

I get yelled at by my family too. I think DH is ready to toss the computers and my 3DDs say MOOOOMMMM you are ALWAYS on the computer when do we get a turn. But Im like you, tabs stay open and I do a random check every so often(like every10mins) so I dont get behind. Some days I do sit and stare at the screen

Im not addicted I swear.

All first time hatchers signed up for this hatch a long, please send me a pm so that I can make a list.

We are very happy to have you hatching with us!

It will be interesting to compare hatch rate from new hatchers and others.
It would be cool if first timers beat the others.
This could be like a no prize contest - just bragging rights.
