5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

OK, I have another question. This will be my second hatch, I have 3 - 4 day olds in the brooder.

I have a Farm Innovators still air incubator, I have added a pc fan so I guess it is now a circulated one. I have also made a wiggler with zip type bags, with a probe type kitchen thermometer. All thermometers and hygrometer have been calibrated.

1) Thermometers are reading about 108 - 109 inside the incubator, and the thermometer in the wiggler is reading 99 - 100. Is this normal? Should the air temp be that much higher with the fan?

Once incubator is up and stable like that, adding the eggs will drop the temp. Wait 24 hours before adjusting anything. It should get to the correct temperature by then. If you need to adjust, make little adjustments and wait at least an hour before adjusting again(unless the temperature inside jumps to over 102).

You are doing a good job so far!

thanks! everything is looking good so far, just need eggies :)

The temperature should be the same.

What thermometer is in the wiggler?

Talking about being on here all day. I just got to work and using phone to check up.
I put a meat thermometer in before i left. I can calabrate them at work to 212 degress. I'll have to bring mine from home in again.

I'm glad i listened to ron about a thermometer that reads in tenths. I bought one from tsc for out side. Cheap but showed me how much my other two didnt show me much. It was moving 99.3-99.7 to day while the ones from walmart one would go from 99-100 and the other same model did 97-99. Still going to order my spot check thursday night.

The wiggler has a calibrated meat thermometer in the middle (reading at 99 - 100). I also have a calibrated meat thermometer down through one of the small vent holes in the top(reading at 109), and a thermometer/hygrometer combo 1" off the bottom screen (reading at 110). I am almost reading to unplug the fan and just do still air again.

Quote: I would have replied sooner but BYC Went wonky!

The problem is likely the thermometers and not the fan. I would leave the fan. Some thermometers will read 32 correctly but then go way off as the temps change. The Wiggler probe will take a bit of time to stabilize too. It might sound weird, but try calibrating using body temperature.

Quote: You did NOT build that coop! Seriously??? yer hired!! my vote is…if you care for the chooks, and build their space on your own….you may have as many as you wish.

I have a question what do you do with all the extra chicks that you can't keep and how old they should be to rehome them I hatched a few chicks a few weeks back and they did have a home intill they back out and another person will only take females and they have to be off heat and she wants them for free
How very generous of them to take only your pullets… (sorry, sarcasm runs in my family…unavoidable really). So if you know this person, and you'd like to give them the gift of raising out pullets for them, maybe they could trade you something? If not, post them on CL, or your State's Thread on BYC, even the Buy Sell Trade on BYC… good luck.

I wish i could join in. I didn't get to ordering in time and I don't know where to get any locally (not to mention Christmas shopping has drained me financially). Hopefully I can jump on the Valentine's day hatch.
I recommend taking a ride and listening for roosters….where there's crowing…..there's fertile eggs. BTW…I'm totally serious, I've done it before and did well.

Well, I'm 350 post's behind, and can't promise I'll be able to catch up.

I am super excited to finally have gotten my eggs for the hatch-a-long! Thank You MsLadyHawke & Blarneyeggs!! From MsLadyHawke I got 9 Barred Hollands & 3 huge white mystery eggs, and from Blarney 6 super dark gorgeous Marans

!! I am sooo happy!

The flash on the camera is doing the Marans eggs no justice, they are much darker than this!
The Ornament is adorable! Sorry I didn't see you, was way off my game yesterday ~we didn't even collect eggs, I wish I had headed out and gotten you 2 more Marans…in any event, hope you get a pullet or 2 outta there!

Another interesting study conducted in Egypt.
Some improved hatching results by dipping the eggs in an ascorbic acid solution for 2 minutes and cooling the eggs to 75 degrees for 6 hours on day 16.
