5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Sounds like a business opportuniy.. At home pet and animal care.

Nobody needs to be there 24 hours a day, but somebody to come by on schedule to feed and water, and close up shop for the night.

There are dog and cat sitters (and walkers), but nobody (that I'm aware of) that would take care of poultry or livestock.

You need to get in touch with your local 4-H. You do that by calling your county's Agriculture Department and asking for the 4-H leader. Tell them that you are looking for a responsible high school student to farm sit for you. A lot of the kids are going on to college for an Agriculture degree.

I went ahead and set 8 eggs. While I tested for fertility on the 6th and 7th, the temps have been much lower here this week. I'm thinking I'll be very lucky to get any development. And to top it off the last egg while I did get it freshly laid it was oddly shaped. All eggs are from pullets too. Maybe just maybe I'll get all hens with everything else not being optimal.

At this point I would say they are unhatchable and get your money back from the Po insurance. Get more eggs. No reason to beat yourself up over not hatching unwatchable eggs when you can get more. The membranes will be streached so far even if chicks developed they will not hatch.

Thank you all on the infrared gun info. I'll check how close it is supposed to be and test it on boiling water.
x2. That's eight days of them being tossed around and scrambled.

They arrived and none are broken! Such a shame to waste such beautiful eggs. I might put them in the incubator tomorrow and see what happens.....you never know.... I don't expect any to hatch

Well I am setting a day late. I had temp spikes and have been bringing them under control. On the good side is I am going to check to see if I have another 2 eggs to add to the hatch.

JLaw I totally understand. My DH dosen't know that I am firing up my bator in the basement.

I mean I GOT to know these eggs will hatch before I can sell or trade them!

After all I am not keeping any of these chicks. I will turn around and sell them.

Okay I have a question.... I thought maybe you guys can enlighten me some. Here goes...
The box of hatching eggs I ordered almost 2 weeks ago are still missing, they have a tracking number, but have not been scanned or moved since the first day of shipment. They were sent 3 day post with $50 insurance. I have contacted the person that sold me the eggs with no reply....So here is my question. Do I go through and make a insurance claim, or does she? If I am the one to do it, how do I do it? Is it an involved process?
I just want to get SOMETHING out of this experience, preferably 7 hatching eggs, but I guess the insurance claim would be the next best thing. =(

We already filed a claim and will have more eggs shipped this week or early next week. It takes 30 days to process a claim. Dmrippy has been wonderful to work with. I will be doing business with her again!
If you don't need to give them to the PO to get your money back, go for it! No harm, no fowls ( hahah!) see if you can find a flashlight at least 400 lumes so you cna see inside them. I can PM you info from one on amazon that will see in Marans eggs with fresh batteries, its about 10 bucks and you need to get a little plumbing thing to make it easy, but its great for those.
Opps I posted to soon, this is to below.

DM ripley is great! very mellow and great packer. She can smell nonsence too, mwhahaha.

I like pullet eggs better, especially for shipping. Smaller eggs hold the membrane better IMO.

see above.

Granted I'm new to this, but I'd bet 50% or better hatch... Eggs can go through hell in nature and still hatch..

It's so cold here at work that I can see my breathe in the trailer I'm loading. They don't believe in heat and turn it down to 50 every morning. Which means when it is 7* outside it is 30* I'm here. We walk up and down the dock debating who is the coldest. To top it off we have to wear steel toe shoes which make your feet stay cold all day
