5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Ron, I've lost a link that you posted (somewhere, sometime in the last month). It was to a wonderful in-depth article on incubation that answered just about every question. Can you re-post it please? I find myself worrying non-stop. Being able to double check against that article would be nice.
Thank you!
I sent you a pm and I have added a bunch of links to the first page. Chickencanoe posted links and they are now on the first page of this thread.

It may have been one of the references he posted on page 1, you could check there. There's also an article at Brinsea's website that's helpful (www.brinsea.com) and then he has links in his sig file that are great.

It's a ~~0720 Hova-Bator Incubator with Automatic Turner almost looks just like the gen 1588

Take the red plug out of it. Adjust the temp just a bit. If it says 101 at the bottom, drop the temp .2 or .3.

That is the Genesis 1588. That's the model that I use and I've had pretty good results with it. I love having the automatic egg turner. The instructions say to fill reservoir #1 only with water for setting and to fill both #1 and #2 for the lock down stage. I found that using reservoir #1 would give me 60% or higher for humidity so I switched to using #2 instead and that gives me between 45-50% humidity which is perfect for my quail eggs. I do use both #1 and #2 for lock down.

Good morning,
I have not totally caught up yet this morning but think the subject is brooders.................

I love mine................They are peg board cut into 2x4x2 or 2x2x2 pieces.
They did this for me at home depot. I put them together with slip ties to make the size I want.
Right now using a 2x4 for 9, 8 week old chicks. I love that they take up little space when torn down.
Also easy to carry outside (when the weather is better). I use a top made from wire cloth? ( the tiny holed fencing)
I'll try to remember to post a pic later.
Now have many pages to read to catch up..............

Those that are having problems posting pics you can E-mail them to me with your username at [email protected] I will post them for you I will check this a few times aday or you can send me a pm to have me check sooner. That's if its easier to mail than post here.

As for chicken brooders I've used a few things and finaly got a set up I like. They go from bator to a cat crate that I cut the lid off of and then built a lid for it. 2-3 days later or if I get too many in there the oldest goes into next step. Which is one of 4 things. I have 2 metal water troughs 2ftx4ft with lids I need to make alittle better or the 2ftx4ft wooden brooder I built. Also I've use a dog kennel where I screw a board to top of it then hang light facing the inside of front door. The cat crate gets 85watt bulb normaly good enough for temp with out cooking them. The others I use a 250 watt to start out with and then I lower the wattage down to 150watts then 95 watts to lower my temp. Only the wooded brooder has a set up where I can raise and lower the light bulbs.

cat crate light sits on lid.cardboard on lower part of door to help keep cold air out.

ATM zip tied but hindges need to secure to bins still. Made this after my last hatch have only used it as a sick bay for my prolapsed vent hen and a broken toe chick so far.

This is the wooden one that is suppose to be out in my mud room but I've yet to take it out there. 2 front doors each held in by a sliding bolt lock going into the wood. don't mind my mess here lol
We use a giant old ice chest (missing its lid) with a homemade lid. Your PVC/zip tie hinge is an awesome idea! We have to remove the entire lid - great job!

Ugh. I hope it was just some weird random short term spike in the temps. I opened the incubator and let it 'air out' a little to cool it, then put the lid back on. Everything's reading 100 again...hopefully the eggs themselves didn't get up to 106 :(

I feel horrible :p

You will know more when you candle them.

There is a very good chance that they are fine.

Wisher, I actually usually put all my brooder and bedding cleanout into compost piles, the ground is currently frozen here, but even in spring and summer I just top off the pile. DH has started putting all the cleanout into a wheelbarrow and wetting it down with the hose first, then adding to the compost. I still will put the brooder cleanout into a bag to get it out there without too much spillage, then reuse the bag. I've re-used bags from shavings bales many many times for this purpose.
