5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

You will know by day 8 usually. If you cannot tell for sure, then wait longer. Use the sniff test though. There is a distinct odor to rotten eggs.

thank you no smell yet .. but the 4 growing egg is part of a school science project for my 11yr old daughter (seeing if eggs from fridge will hatch) and my other 2 + double yolker was collected 4 days before hatch are the slower eggs.we did project last min. since my 4 hens stopped laying and eggs i order didnt show up (i did get refunded on eggs) so night before hatch we took eggs out of fridge and sat them out to warm up and marked with X . is there a known good way to get candling pic's?

That :sick smell usually starts as an "eggy" smell and gets more rotten the longer it sits. Good eggs=no smell. Bad eggs=eggy or foul smell.

Stay away from blue, too, then lol. You'd think blue, being a light color, would be easy to see through but gosh darnit, I've had better luck seeing into black eggs than blue.

Nooooooo - I want cream legbars next!

:p Then get yourself a powerful candler or a couple high-lumen flashlights. And good luck!

If you mean to take them, I can get good candling pics even with my crappy iPod camera if I just take them in a pitch-black room.

Here's my pic though not current. I've culled a lot today. Found only 5 embryos and some iffy that I'm keeping. I started with 24 down to 21 now down to about 10... Am on day 6. I had a lot of detached air cells, old eggs, infertile eggs.so excited this is our first time hatching and are using shipped eggs that took forever to get to us. These are bantam Cochin smooth and frizzles.
I could not wait till 11th to set.. Had to do it Sunday Dec8.

Finally got a picture of the eggs. Not a pretty one.
There are 47 eggs. They're all Black Penedesenca. Not all my birds. I got 2 pullets from a friend that laid light eggs. In the interest of new blood I put my biggest rooster over them. Normally I wouldn't hatch eggs that light. About 7 of the eggs are from them.
I set 24 the afternoon of the 11th, 22 more on the 12th and 2 more yesterday. I discovered one broken when turning this morning. I'm not counting it bur I cooled it rapidly and I'm going to seal it with wax and return it.
I discovered more issues with my hatcher. 2 of the 4 fans have failed. I'm still going to move the eggs into the cabinet today. I should be able to get replacement fans in time.

Hoop pen collapsed from the wet snow this morning.

I decided to add a little more water after reading so many posts about humidity AND figuring in my dry skin....

It's the calm before the storm here, literally and figuratively
, literally and figuratively. A winter storm is bearing down on us, AND the grandchildren are on their way!

Nice Eggs!

I hope the chickens were ok!

I had to wait a while before it would let me on this morning. Working now though! So, thought I would share what I found hatched in a tree who knows when. Ha..anyone else have any of these hatching soon? We have another grandbaby on the way, number 33!
Congratulations! Oh, how I wish little human babies could be hatched like chicken eggs, my heart's wish of becoming a mom would've been granted long ago if that was the case... Imagine 9 months of willing an egg to hatch though, and candling to see development!
