5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I hatched two of them from a dozen so they cost me 1.75 each.

I think that is Luna. I sent them to live in Redding California. The other one was taken by a Hawk or a Bobcat.

Well, my eggs haven't come yet..were sent out on Tues. .. This is from another person that I bought from, I do have some in the bator, set a day early, but if those eggs come on Mon. I just may get a couple if they didn't freeze. Feeling hopeful if eggs that have been in a refrigerator can develop. :))

Thanks everyone for the advice - one coop shade coming up. Bottles of water in the freezer. Will see if I can find a solar powered fan, I think you can get them for car windows? But I have a regular fan I can set up near to the door or window to move the air through the coop - I can also open the rear doors to let a breeze go though from front to back.

Howzat?!

And here she is - one back door open to keep her fully in shade (14:30 at the moment) and both windows wide open. I will remove middle box and stand the frozen water bottles next to her. As you can see - she has insisted on sitting in her favorite nest rather than move to one of the lower ones!

Thanks to all the broody house comments. Made some changes I am very pleased about! Got the chicks out of the house. Hooray! I don't like them in here past a week old.

Made a 2 level brick platform under the heat lamp so the bricks get warm. They can get right under the lamp or be down a couple inches. The broody house is 4' x 5' so it loses heat fast. I like the heated bricks for the babies. So much better! Thanks everyone for all the pictures and comments. Wonderful way for us to learn.

I'll be working on that tomorrow . . stinky golden cuckoo Marans chicks are going out to share the chick house with my Silkie chicks. I need to get the guest bedroom ready for Christmas!

the eggs are white, so I'm assuming leghorn mix. I guess I should email and find out what they are!

Did you see ron's post of his leghorn...he says yes, they are leghorns. He shows a photo of one that he hatched from there. I'll say it again..I wish I had one of those stores around! I love me some leghorns!

Yaay for shade! And the water bottles will help..I always make sure there is water almost right in front of their face when they are broody in the summer. The food not far away either. I'm sure she will appreciate any fresh cool fruit that you have on hand. :) How fun..a mama soon to be, and it's always fun to watch them and their babies.
