5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I'm 6/10th mile off a main truck route, or 2 miles from a service station on that route (I imagine plenty of us rural folks are actually close to roads like that). Anyway, I'll hopefully have several breeds of purebreed hatching eggs, as well as chicks, (& tons of EE mixed eggs & chicks b/c they lay & hatch great), the purebreeds won't be for another couple months but EE/OE under CL roo would be sooner, as in I've got those now even. PM me if you are interested, I'm 1 hr N of Chattanooga TN so they wouldn't have too long of a ride to anywhere in GA from here. (spring/early summer purebreeds to include Heritage BR, Cream Legbar (2 diff roos), & SFH small # at first from black background crested gal, more to follow in summer). These picutes are from back in Sept -- H. BR & SFH have both matured *a lot* since then, but this gives you a general idea what they look like.
What is SFH? And he goes through Tennessee pretty often so I'm sure we could work something out ;)

So I'm learning how to candle. Today is day 7 (or 8?). Chicken math effects my ability to tell what day it is, as well as how many there are.

There is lots of veins in my blue EE eggs and MFLeghorns! I'm going to candle them all today for a good count.

The CL I bought appear to be duds. Got 11. 6 light up like big ol blue bulbs. Since I can see well inside my EE's, I'm going to assume that I am not just missing something inside a blue egg. 3 of the remaining 5 appear to have blood rings and 2 have smudgy stuff inside, looks like they're scrambled. I left those 5 in the incbtr until Sat. If nothing changes I will remove them. I did put them on the far row just in case they have a bacteria. I don't want that spreading to the MFL's.

I can't hold the egg and take pictures -- but do the descriptions sound as if I am correct in removing the 6? Should I have also removed the others?

Morning' fellow chicken addicts! I have a couple questions.
My hubs is an OTR truck driver so he goes all over. We live in rural Georgia so getting eggs, chicks, etc is pretty limited. If he were to pick up chicks and bring them home would they do okay? And if he's in y'all's area would you be willing to meet him? Since he obviously can't drive a semi most places not on a main road.

One of these http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bravo-View-INV-150-150-Watt-Peak-Power-Inverter/9729856 an extension cord, a box and a light bulb should get them home safely.

Ron I totally agree. He calls y'all my Crazy Chicken Lady Enabler Group. Lol. But if I mention turkeys ducks or geese it's another storey.

My girls actually labeled one of my xmas gifts "To: The Crazy Chicken Lady"! We have a tradition of putting silly names on xmas gifts for each other.

The two EE's are further developed then any of the others. It's only those dumb CL's that just wouldn't grow. Makes me happy though, that all of the eggs from our chickens are growing.

Except to check the CL's on Sat, I won't candle until lock down. I'm already paranoid that just a little handling will somehow hurt them.

The veins were so clear though, all I had to do was hold the (modified) flashlight to the egg and I could see them. So it was a quick trip out of the incubator (steady, steady :) ) and back in. Then my knee bumped the table leg and I cannot believe how clumsy I am! Hoping that little jostle didn't somehow set them all off track. Looks like incubation is the easy part. Hatching has all those other variables though... (where is the little nervous, biting it's nails, icon?)
