5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Candled (yes day11, can't help it massive storms last night so had to wait but HAD to do it today to mark air cells, it is my only humidity info!)

So, of my 49 originally set on Dec11 for NYDH I have _13_which appear alive atm, of those there are some seriously sloshy wonky air cells, which made marking them for humidity way less clear cut than I expected based on prior experience : / , humm so this is interesting...

I have also discovered that the new CL Good King Henry had not fully introduced himself to his green egg laying ladies as of 12/15,
but he has since then as the eggs I set dated later than that have some veins forming, or at least I imagined I saw something in there.
While my original CL Prince continues 100% w/ his ladies, but oddly one of the excellent large brown eggs is an early quit bloodring which is a puzzler <shrug>.

So this candling has raised as many questions as it answered.

Also, I find the bator looking almost half empty, those unwashed eggs by the kitchen sink sure do make me wonder, do I really need an omelet this week? Several girls should start into laying any day/week/month now, so should I wait to test eggs then when I have plenty more or...??

& Finally, so glad the broody hen in OZ has beat the heat (w/ lots of extra care from her human) and we shall be enjoying pics of flufies in that cutest coop of all times soon :>

What things have you guys done that was a "NO NO" in the past during your hatches? How did you fix it?

One of mine was that I kept opening the incubator during hatch day to look for new pips. I ended up with shrink wrapped chicks afterwards. My fix is to put the eggs in egg cartons so that I don't have to open the bator to see if any has pipped. I think this may work. My last hatch some of the pips were on the bottom side of the egg so I couldn't see if they had pipped. The real fix would be to leave it for a couple days and never even go into the room they are in. Or better yet duct tape my hands together.

I can imagine that!
I had a broody once that was SO LOUD, like it was crazy. If you even went in like 10 metres of her shed go bonkers!!!
I have a young bantam splash laced red Wyandotte pullet that ISN'T broody but came out of the box at me after laying an egg and attacked my hand as I tried to collect the egg! She bit me so hard she drew blood! She screams LOUD after I collect the eggs and I can still hear her by the time I make it to the house! She is a CRAZY one! Good thing she is so cute

I don't have a separate hatcher. My plan is that they hatch in the brinsea, then go to the brooder when fluffy. Does a hatcher help? Or is it more for when you have staged hatchings?

Assuming I get any chicks. Blasted dark uncandleable eggs.
im doing that too. im letting mine hatch in my farmers innovator, and taking all out to the brooder once fluffy.

im with you on the dark, uncandleable eggs. I have OEs......so green. I think I may have only one clear I know of...its a bit lighter, and doesn't have a huge blob like my others have (I think these blobs are chicks!)

They can. Many will use different units for incubating and hatching. It helps to increase humidity for eggs about to hatch, while keeping humidity low for eggs still incubating. It also makes clean up easier.
ok! thanks!

just want to give a Big Thank You to BYC for a fun hatch along

I think mine would have to be assisted hatches. A few times it has worked out for the chick, but more often I would get the chick out and it would have something wrong with it and have to be culled later, which I hate! I wish I could let nature take its course but that mothering instinct in me has to help.
