5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

So sorry.

Wait until the new rooster has been with the hens for about 18 to 20 days. They egg are fertilized early in the cycle, and there are 3 to 5 in process of being laid so you need to take the 14 days and ad 3 to 5 to the number to get 14 days from fertilization. Eggs actually incubate for a day during the egg laying cycle.

What the study says is that the addition of a new rooster will cause the old sperm to go away quicker. If you do not add a new rooster, you need to wait 20 days plus 3 to 5 days for the sperm to be gone from the old Rooster, so 23 to 25 days should work then.

Even so, there are some cases where the old sperm lasted more than 30 days. It does get tricky and if you have all of one breed you will not really be able to tell if they are mixed. with EEs and BRs, you will be able to tell easily which fathered the chicks.

Wait 18 days and collect them, set them for hatching and see what you get. EE mixes are very pretty and if you do not want them sell them on Craigs list or at an Animal Exchange.
You rock Ron! That is a very clear and easily understandable explanation of it. Will be filing this away in my "things that are good to know".

Really I would do exactly what you're doing and see how the offspring come out temperament wise. We've had our fare share of idiot aggressive roos, and im not afraid to say many of them met my boot. Not trying to sound crule but I won't tolerate a human agressive bird, it will end up in the deep freeze too. Hope that helps. -MCF
x2 I feel the same. I will not tolerate an aggressive roo, either to humans or to my hens. I also will not tolerate bullies in my flock. The pecking order is one thing and I do not interfere in their social order. However, any bird that is just mean for the sake of being mean, just because they can is culled. I like harmony in my back yard.

Thanks everybody but I candled the other eggs and we broke into all the other eggs and they were yoke or a fetus about 2 inches long at the most and so I didn't get one chick out of the 6 eggs I collected from my flock(they were not shipped eggs) so I guess I'll order from a hatchery in January

Oh no! I am so sorry!

that's actually my question too. ive seen some create a little egg holder that can hold the egg on its side....ive also seen some hatching in cartons....ive seen some hatch on bator screen.....what is the most affective way?

if they are all equal, I think I will just place mine on the bator screen.

oh its fine! I think its important to know too.

my mom just made me my birthday cake for tomorrow....its AWESOME!
she made me an egg! she also had fried egg candy (candy to look like fried eggs) she placed the eggs next to the cake......I asked to draw on a bulls eye...LOL. well she said no....but when she left I took a toothpick and drew on bulls eyes with icing! LOL ill post a picture later! it all looks great!
I use my homemade bator so I don't know about the screen. But the rubbery shelf liner seems to give them good traction and is easy to clean. I have done one hatch in cartons and one hatch laying down. I much preferred the cartons. It is so much easier to see what is going on that way.
Please do post pics of your cake. It sounds so cute! Happy Birthday!

Had a dog attack today. Neighbors dog figured out how to get out of his fenced yard and ran after the chickens. Rufus and Raven took no damage. Cinder had some scrapes and a pinch or two of feathers missing. Long John Silver had all but one of his tail feathers and all but two of his saddle feather yanked out plus some scrapes. But Chicken Little took the most damage. She had 2 rents on either side of her spine over the shoulders. She had a puncture bite bridging her low back. But the worst was the rent that started at mid chest and curved around up under her wing, about 6 inches long. Even so only the punctures really went deeper than the skin level. Peroxide, Neosporin, powdered sugar and needle and suture thread then gauze and a Ace Bandage. She and Long John are camping in my bathroom tonight while I get my dog crate cleaned out to keep them until they are better.

Big thanks to my friend Zoey and my daugher, Morgan, for being my assistants for the chicken surgery.

Oh no! That is awful!

I hope they make a speedy and complete recovery.

X2
That's how I always explain it. Hatching or buying straight run and processing extras when grown is better than chicks dying as day olds just because they were boys.
For every backyard or small farm free range hen, there is one less miserable hen in a cage.
x3 This is so true. I always think of the story about the man throwing the starfish back into the ocean. It makes a difference to those he helped, and it makes a difference to every bird we raise and keep in happy, fulfilling and healthy environments.

Merry Christmas everyone!! Hope it's been a good one so far...I know mine has

My wonderful mother knows me SOOOO well...I didn't even say a word that I wanted this...it was too expensive...I knew I couldn't afford it, and neither could she. It brought me to tears when I opened the Christmas wrap and saw what was inside! Crazy that a 38 year old would cry over a brooder!!!

Moms are AWESOME, especially mine!!
It isn't crazy. I think we all still have that child inside that feels the wonder and magic when someone does something to show how well they know us and listen to us and how much they love us. So happy that your holiday wish came true.

Well you can use granulated sugar too, I just had an abundance of the powder kind because it was Christmas. Sugar in a wound does multiple things. One: if you have bleeding going on it dissolves in the blood and thickens it right away. Two: often times with an injury you have the circulation system compromised. Cells need three things to live, water, sugar to burn for energy, and oxygen to burn the sugar. Usually the cells in a wound can get enough oxygen right out of the air unless it is a deep puncture wound. But if the blood supply has been comprised you will have cell death before the blood circulation can be restored. So you use sugar that once dissolved in the blood will cross the damaged cell walls. This will keep the cells living till hopefully the circulation system can be repaired. This reduced the cell death which helps to keep infection down.
Thank you. This is really great info. Something else to the "things that are good to know" file.

Well I have bad news..... the 2nd candling of our eggs show that only one egg holds a day 14 embryo.
sad.png
I don't see movement in it so I am just hoping it is alive, but the others have certainly not grown since day 10 or so. Now I am just praying it lives to hatch day. It would be sad to not have any at all!
And I hope the other 8 have good signs in them when I candle them Friday. Man wouldn't it be a wonder to incubate 15 eggs and get 0 chicks.....
Oh no! I hope that one hatches and that maybe some of the others are just foolin' ya.

Is most everyone on lockdown?
Nope not yet for me. Mine are due NYD so lockdown isn't until ummm Sunday I think. Getting hard to think past the cold medicine.
