5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I hope everyone had a GREAT Christmas, we just got home after having two long days of Christmas so we are all off to bed. See you all in the AM.

Did my day 14 candle tonight. Air cells are looking pretty good. Maybe just a titch on the small side, so I will lower humidity by a hair for last few days. All 3 EEs are going strong still. All but one Lav Orp looks good. One just looks... I dunno just off. I'm not sure though so it stays for now. The SFH air cell has finally stabilized, but it is massively saddle-shaped. I think I could see veins and some movement, but I'm just not sure. Again, it stays for now.

Quote: My red star eggs are not as dark as your maran egg. But with my flashlight I get close to what you are getting with your bright light. I'm thinking your candler would be great for my red star eggs.
But how do you decide which Maran eggs to keep if there are no clear veins or movement visible due to a dark shell? Since I won't be getting a better candler for this hatch I need an alternative method to decide when to toss these dark shelled eggs.

You can always use the sniff test. Take the egg out and sniff with your nose real close. If you can't detect any unpleasant odor then put it back in.

The air cell will get bigger and the egg will get darker as the chick fills it up. The High intensity candler needs fresh batteries. I am using 2500mAh high capacity enloop rechargeable batteries.

With Marans you need something like this to see into them or weigh them and measure weight loss.

I had some STINKING suspicion something was a fowl, Candle all of the EE and FBCM,,Sure enough found an EE that stunk to high heavenn peeeweeeewww.. Hopefully all is better, I think 3 were EE the last count,,

Merry Christmas everyone! I just candled and out of ten eggs, 4 were to dark to see, 5 had veins and embryos and a few had movement, and I think one stopped growing :/ cuz it doesn't have veins and it's just kinda a blob now compared to the other eggs. but still that's only one out of ten! I'll leave it in for now. my air cells are small tho :/ my humidity is around 30, I'm going to let it drop, is there still hope that my air cells will get big enough?

If they are too small I would lower the humidity for the last days until lockdown. It may not make them the "ideal"size but I don't think it could hurt and may still help.
