5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

To me the toes look ok. I see the slight curl but I personally wouldn't tape it. That said I also don't show and I know you could possibly lose points so you might want to ask this on the silkie thread and see if you can get advice from someone who shows silkies.

I LOVE HER FURRY FEET

Bantambury - if you have access to the breed standard, read it over, commit it to memory, and compare your birds to it. You might want to joint the American Silkie Bantam Club - the yearbook will blow your mind, but the thing it's really useful for is helping you get a picture in your mind of what the ideal Silkie looks like. Compare your birds to that picture, and then decide what you want to breed. I, like most of us, learned the hard way, on dogs. Before you decide which of your birds to pair, if you have the opportunity to attend a show where there will be a good Silkie entry, or find a current breeder to mentor you, you will propel yourself toward your goals much faster than you can imagine. There are some very successful Silkie breeders across the country, and with your brains and ambition, you could go far, fast, if that's what you want to do. Most poultry breeders are incredibly generous about sharing the knowledge they've gathered - you're seeing some great examples here. I have every confidence you can do whatever you set your mind to. Once you learn more about the breeds you want to pursue, and the various breeding methods used to improve breeds and create strains and lines, the sky's the limit for you.
WOW. Very inspiring for me. NEVER heard anyone write this thoughtful......

I just looked at the websight.....OMG. by birds look NOTHING like them. they are all so GORGEOUS! just a little nerve racking and a putdown. at least I know what to strive for!

now im looking for silkie breeders on BYC. I think I WILL order eggs for the easter hatch. this has been twice now where my breeder gave us jap eggs telling us they were silkies. I don't think I will trust him anymore on silkies....not to be mean, but I don't think he knows much about them

he JUST started breeding a lot......with them.....I think this traces back to my crooked beaked baby.

THANKS SO MUCH for this wonderful info! again, very inspiring to me!

After following this thread for days and being so jealous of all the new babies, broke down and ordered an incubator on Amazon- Genesis Hovabator 1588. So I can participate next Hatch- a - Long. This website is addicting!
We used that very bator for our first hatch this time. It worked! We were so surprised to have ANY hatch :D It really is fun to be part of a hatch a-long with so many knowledgeable people. Makes it a fun way to learn!

Well I am in the running for the worst hatch. I had a temp spike two days ago that killed mine. 131˚ nothing survived that. I have no idea why it would spike that outrageously, unless it was because one of the cats curled up to sleep on the warm viewing window overnight. I will photo the eggs later tonight. I will open them tomorrow and see if I was doing alright up to the spike from Hell.

Our last one hatched last night, and the total is 28 chicks in our hatcher this time around

unfortunately they tipped the water bottle in the brooder and all got wet. 2 died from chill the rest are fine now that they have had their first bath and are all dried out. We have put them all back into the hatcher (a couple of degrees cooler) for another day to make sure they are properly warmed.
