Hi all me and my wife just brought our new and first chickens home today we got 6 black australorps I think they are about 3 weeks old so far we've kept them around 80° no shivers or anything at about 85 there was some panting all seems to be good now. They have been pretty active for the stress today has given them.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Glad your chicks are doing well. As long as the brooder has a warm spot (80* or so for 3 week olds like you said) and cooler spots (you don'r want the whole brooder the same temp), your chicks should be comfortable, they'll just move in and out of the heat as they want. Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Your chicks are adorable. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. glad you have joined us. Congratulations on your new half dozen chicks!

Do follow Kelsie2290's advice and move the heat lamp to one end of the brooder to allow them to move to areas of comfort.

IMO your brooder size will be outgrown really soon, they need room to move around, flap wings, and I would suggest you figure a way to enlarge it.

Also looks like they are on newspaper. By their 2nd week they need some traction and you need to add pine shavings or whatever bedding you plan to use. Newspaper is to slippery and can cause leg problems.

You should visit the learning center and I would suggest starting with the articles on raising baby chicks.
