Hello! I was directed to this amazing wealth of knowledge by Google and some helpful Reddit users at https://www.reddit.com/r/BackYardChickens/. This is my second post on the forum, unfortunately I was having issues with one of our chicks, but she seems to be doing much better now.

I am new to the forum and to chick care in general. I've wanted pet chickens for about 10 years; my family wasn't keen on the idea until this year. For my 40th birthday my father-in-law is building the most epic chicken coop that will be done in just enough time for these babies to occupy it.

We picked up 6 chicks on 10/3 at the local feed store, a neighbor has had good luck with the store's source sexing the chicks correctly. Although I'm a bit hesitant to trust them after we thought we'd bought 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Delawares only to find out our 3 Delawares are actually 1 Delaware and 2 Plymouth Rocks. It just showed me how much more I need to research because Delawares don't come in black...

I'll share the girls below, none of them have offical names yet.
Rhode Island Reds

This little Rhode Island Red had pasty butt & almost died from it! I've never rubbed a chicken's vent before that day and I hope I never have to again, lol.
She's eating and drinking properly now; it looks like the battle stunted her growth a bit & she isn't as food aggressive as the others. Hopefully she catches up.

Our Delawares Plymouth Rock chicks.
These two love jumping in our hands & climbing our arms.

The one true Delaware.
She is super independent & was the first to jump into our hands.

You can also check them out on our stream, which is linked in my signature. I tried linking it here, but it tries to get me to imbed it and it's too early to deal with that lol.
We started it as a way to keep an eye on them when we are working & can't get up to check them every 5 minutes or at least I don't want my work thinking I do that. It's so hard to resist them.
We're working on getting a live cam feed set up outside for when they move to the coop.

Welcome to BYC! I’ll give you a heads up- RIR chicks look great in fall photos, might want to enter some of the contests at this link https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/sponsored-content-contests-and-giveaways.15879/ Feed stores don’t usually have an accurate label on their chicks, nor do they have a great ornamental variety (mostly sell egg production breeds) but I have found BRs to be quite amazing birds! I love mine so much, and while I only have two of that breed now, I once had a flock that included 11 BRs!!! They are so great I think you’ll like them :welcome
