Well, their tiny feet might get hurt on sharp grip. Soft sand is better.

Well, we bought construction sand from Lowe's. You want course sand, not the fine stuff.

If your dirt from outside has tiny rocks in it they will use that as grit. You only need to give them grit if they are eating anything but chick feed.

They only need grit if you are feeding them anything else besides chick starter crumbles, which at this age, they should only be eating chick starter. They eat grit(tiny rocks) to help break down foods in their crop
