6 day old chick has angel wing/slipped wing UPDATED WITH PIC POST #7

In my barred rock pullets, when they were a week or two old, a lot of them looked like they had angel wing. Probably a third of them. I was pretty concerned at first, then I think I posted something about it, and someone said basically not to worry, that it might just be growing in oddly, but it would straighten out on it's own. I hadn't found anything on how to fix angel wing, just that it is usually found in water fowl, and that it was caused from too much protein in the diet. I decided that I didn't care if their wings looked funny, since they used them just fine, already flapping them as they ran around. My barred rocks are almost six weeks old now, and their feathers are perfect(and they fly/coast/jump really well). So it is possible that some chicks just feather funny to start with, then when they get their full set of feathers, everything sorts itself out.

Hope that helps you!

Thank you Carrie! That makes me feel much better. I keep worrying if I should try and fix it, but then I worry I might make it worse or do something wrong. Perhaps I will just leave her alone and let nature takes its course. If she ends up having "angel wing" when she is mature, then she'll just be my "special" chicken, LOL.

Glad to help. That was what I finally decided about mine, if they had odd wings, it wouldn't hurt them any, so I didn't worry about it. But mine are fine, and hopefully your little one will be, too.

It could be the others are pecking at her wings. I had that happen with some silkies. I saw that one I had in with them was picking there wings and I pulled that one out. After a few mouths you could not tell at all. I did nothing. Watch for it.

SpeckledPullet- Just curious how your chick ever feathered out? I have a barred Rock chick born a few days ago that looks just like yours did. I love to see another picture of your chick now.

I too am curious as to how your chick ended up feathering out. I have a BLRW chick that is about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks old and his/her wings are "sticking out" as well.

I think what your seeing is the wing feathers growing in? I had a cochin look like that until it filled in. Angel wing come from feeding water fowl a diet with to high of a protein level. That cant be the case with a chicken. They do great on a high protein diet.

I know that the cause of angel wing in waterfowl is debated. Some say too high protein and others say too high carbohydrates. In either case, I too don't think chicks get "angel wing", but as I only have 1 chick that has ever looked like this, I was wondering how the OP's chick feathered out.

Did this chick end up ok? I have a BLRW who is starting to have feathers pointing out (she is 6 days old) and I was very worried. Upon searching, every single picture with similar wing issues is of a baby BLRW. So, maybe it's just something that happens sometimes with the breed. Do you have any advice, 4 years later? Thanks so much!
