I have a 6 day old Delaware who I found standing with eyes closed two days ago. She showed no interest in eating but when I helped her she would drink water. I've been feeding her with a tiny syringe - miniscule drops of liquid (yogurt, yolk, water, and a drop of nutri-drench). She will eat nothing solid (even when I ground up her starter in a coffee grinder). She is still upright with bright eyes, but she is really tiny and thin - totally disinterested in pecking at ANYTHING or dipping her beak into water. Any ideas? Is it possible she will suddenly start pecking at food and eating solids like the other chicks? She is currently isolated from the flock, and I've got her in a brooder box beside me. She's so sweet, but I honestly don't know if I'm kidding myself by feeding her every two hours drops of liquids. She obviously can't live like this forever.

I also have a 6 day old California White - highly energetic, eating, pooping, drinking, trying to leap out of the brooder. She's a beautiful big baby. The temperature is right in the brooder. She will NOT stop cheeping. Sounds like distress (possibly) because she won't be quiet, but we cannot figure out what it might be.

Have you checked the Delaware for pasty butt?
Is her crop empty or full?
How many chicks are in the brooder now with the CW?

Thanks for responding.

For the Delaware - No pasty butt, but I saw the start of some and cleaned it off a few days ago. Also, she had a pretty black scab on her navel - large scab. I've cleaned it with Vetericyn and applied a little iodine to the scab. Her crop is only full after I feed her. Then, it goes down in a few hours (all liquid diet, I guess). I'm open to any ideas.

There are 8 other very healthy chicks in the brooder with the CW.

The black scab on the navel is disconcerting. Perhaps she's developed omphalitis. Don't remove the scab but do apply some triple antibiotic ointment twice a day.

If she has developed omphalitis you would need to know which bacteria caused the infection to get the right antibiotic to treat her. Is a vet an option?

I can call my vet and see if he'll treat a 6 day old chick.

Add some vitamins and electrolytes to her water. Little chicks can easily become dehydrated.
I gave her Sav a Chick on days 3 and 4. She has been getting NutriDrench on days 5 and 6. Still will not peck at anything. Not at starter, not at a shiny object, not at water. She is still swallowing the liquids I'm giving her through a dropper, and she is still standing upright and chirping. Eyes open for now.

Please post some photos of the Delaware, her abdomen and her poop.
Photos of the brooder and the other chicks too - if you are using a heat lamp, turn off the light so photos are clear. Thanks!

What is the temp of the brooder that the CW is in (warm and cool side). How big is it?
