What behavior should I expect from a lone 6 day old chick with her broody hen?

The chick is still constantly under the hen. I haven’t seen the hen teach her to drink or eat. Although that could be happened my obviously when I’m not there.

The chick chirps underneath her. I have never seen the chick walking around outside of mom.

Is this normal? I’m just not sure if mom is still broody and just sitting and not teaching?

The chick is staying warm. Are there still unhatched eggs in the nest?
I ended up taking them out. They had been there over 25 days. But there is a new development….
I ended up getting 6 freshly hatched chicks. Last night I snuck them under my three broody hens and took all their older eggs.
I was wanting more chickens without having to raise them in a brooder in my house. I hope it works. So far so good (next morning).

Interesting. I'm contemplating doing the same. I have an Australorp who has gone broody...sitting on the fake egg. LMAOOOO

I'm thinking I'll grab some young chicks from Atwoods or TSC and stick them under her to break the broodiness. I'm just snooping around these threads to find advice. I'm about to move the rooster out to a bachelor pen with my cockerels, so there will only be six hens in that flock. Really just trying to understand how hens with chicks work with an existing flock.

How are things going with your experiment?

How long has she been broody?
Generally it's not wise to give a broody chicks before 2 weeks of sitting without messing with her internal clock.

No need to remove the Rooster. He shouldn't hurt the little ones, that's his future. Most of the time the Momma won't let him or the other hens near the babies for a spell. Then she'll start introductions when she's ready. Your rooster will know this and keep his distance. The best part is at hatch the babies are instantly integrated into the flock.

Best of luck.

She's been in that box for nearly two weeks. I put the chicks (Black Sex Links) under her tonight and got the clucking I wanted to hear and she used her beak to tuck them under! I'll go out at sunrise to check to make sure everything is kosher.

Rooster and cockerels got themselves a bachelor pad yesterday. They yelled a lot today, but the hens needed a break from Eddie the Nympho and the pullets were not sad to see Amos and Woody go on vacation; had three that spent 90% of their day in the coop and today they were outside for 90% of the day!

When I was a teen, we had a bantam that went broody on a golf ball. We ended up giving her duck eggs and she hatched out eight baby mallards. All went well until her "chicks" discovered the baby pool. That's when we humans discovered the meaning of the word "apoplectic" ... she went NUTS!
