Hi, i am hoping someone has some insight to what is happening with my pullet, Elsie. She started laying eggs 7 eggs so far. only 2 have been normal. the first was one a rubber egg off the roost at night. 4 days later she laid a normal egg in the nesting box. the third egg was a sandpaper egg. 4 egg was normal in nesting box. 5 and 6 were laid off the roost last night. one normal the other was just a yolk. today after work she was in the nesting box and came out and laid these 2 eggs in front of me. no albumen and they were connected by the membrane. is this just a bad start for her? is she ill? she is acting and eating and drinking normal.her vent is clear. does anyone have advice, it is appreciated. thank you.

It's pretty common for new layers to lay some wonky eggs. Is she on layer feed now? I would just make sure she has access to free-choice oyster shell and maybe some electrolytes in case she is stressed at all. Let us know how the next few eggs look!

They are on all flock and oyster shell on the side. How long before I need to intervene with calcium d3 tablets? I haven't dealt with this before. These last eggs 😳

I think you can give her vitD3 and calcium anytime. Just once a day, I don't think it would hurt especially for piece of mind to make sure she's getting some.
I agree with the above. Best way I have found to do this is at night shortly after they go to roost. Just open her beak and pop it in, she is well able to swallow it. Give one tablet for five days and that should clear up the problem. Let us know if it does not. Calcium citrate +D3 is available in the supplements/ vitamins section of virtually any grocery. Good luck with her.

update on Elsie. the calcium is helping, although she continues to lay 2 eggs, one after the other. mainly off the roost at night. last night she had a normal shell and then a paper shell egg right after that. you can see on the good shell that they were touching before being laid. she has only laid one egg twice. every other time it is two at a time. this will work itself out i am hoping.i am also going to try flaked oyster shell instead of the pebble oyster shell. maybe she will like that better.

Elsie finally laid a normal egg this morning! 7 days 300mg calcium citrate daily. I read to give for 3 days beyond and then see how it goes. Does that sound right?

I'd go longer than that, maybe another week to ensure she continues to consistently lay normal shelled eggs. If she's good through that period you can try cutting back, like every other day for 1-2 weeks, and then every 3rd day, etc.

I have a question. Can you give to much calcium? I gave elsie 2 weeks every day calcium, then 1 week every other day, then started to do every 3 days and then she laid a shell less egg in the run. so now she has had calcium every day for 4 days. laid normal egg today. inbetween the everyday and every other day she laid an egg off the roost at night that was thin shell and broke once a week. she has been laying eggs for 5 weeks and is now 7 months old. how long can pullets have a glich in their laying? thank you for advice.

Pullets can be glitchy for a while and 5 weeks isn't that long. She sounds like she lays fairly frequently too?

I'd probably go back to every other day for now, knowing she'll may have some thin or off eggs, and keep her at that for maybe 3-4 weeks so you have a good long period to see results. If she's mostly consistent at the end of that time, then I'd try maybe 2 weeks with every third day, and so on. The hope is that she can be weaned off the supplements at some point because yes you don't want to be giving her high doses of calcium, but you don't want her straining to pass soft eggs or having them break inside her either.
