So I'm the proud mama of 6 new barred rock pullets about 2 weeks old. Pretty little things. I bought them because they were available and I like the color. I'm curious about their temperament, laying habits etc from other barred owners.

Barred Rocks are my favorite breed/color variety-I also have blue/black/splash Rocks, but I've always been partial to the barred hens. Had them for years, including roosters, both hatchery stock as well as heritage show stock. They are friendly without being needy, as well as the best layers I own. I have them from a year old up to 5 1/2 years old. In my personal opinion, they are the best all-round backyard/farm flock chicken.

They are independent, good foragers and never pushovers in a mixed flock.

You have made a good choice. My BRs do very well in all aspects--laying & temperment. You will have the usual pecking order, but with a group that starts off young together the pecking order stuff will be minimal.Mine lay 4 or 5 eggs a weeks and the only slowed a little during the winter.

I love my rocks, they are so sweet and friendly, and always come up first and let me pet their backs, and they purr.
