6 week old EE Roos or Pullets? *UPDATE* Oh NO! She's Crowing!

Your first chick looks like a roo to me. The second one looks almost exactly like my EE chick Maggie. So far, I think she's a she.

Can you line up someone who will take a roo IF you have a roo? That's what I've done.

I'm definitely no expert and am still waiting to be sure with my 10 week olds. And I have 2 EE's that are 5-wks old and one has a red, 3-pea comb and one has a 1-pea comb and no red at all yet. But my Black Sex-Link pullets that are also 5 weeks old have red in their combs and red wattles coming in already.

I'm not so sure about this red thing. I just don't know!! I think laying an egg or not is the only way to tell for sure.

P.S. Your chicks are sure pretty.

When you figure out how that is happening, let me know. I'm getting them too!

Yes, that is what I'm going to try and do. Everything I've read says pea combs have 3 rows, 1 larger than the other. It's the redness and size that determines the sex so I'm going to wait since there is no red whatsoever in her comb. It's just a darker orangish-yellow. It's basically the same color as her beak.

And thank you for the compliment

I think Coral is a girl also. If she was a Colby, her comb should be much darker than it is at 6 weeks.

Here's a pic of our single-combed EE roo, Geezer, last year at 6 weeks old...

That really is what I'm hoping for and what my gut tells me. My 3 week old EE bantam who turned out to be a roo was a roo from the first day really. He just had that "swagger" and then the comb turned huge and super red overnight. Her's has just been a gradual growth. She isn't bigger overall either, the same size as Joey. They both feathered really early and completely and other than wanting to be outside, act like hens - real skittish. I dunna know! I wish they sent them with pink or blue hats or something

Waiting for the crowing will be a bit too late, lol. I'm hoping something really pronounced or big happens in the next couple weeks (other than crowing) so I can find her a home if I have too. Anyone want a pretty EE?

Yes, they really do! Other than having a slightly bigger comb, Coral looks like your white hen in last pic in the comb area. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you so much to everyone who has posted an opinion.

Well, there is no doubt now....Coral is Corey. We woke this morning to the most awful squawking I have ever heard and came in the office to find Corey puffed up all proud and crowing! I had really held out hope for just an overgrown, way ahead of her time girl, but nope, she's a he and he's gotta go soon!

Anyone want a pretty, tame EE rooster?

Oh, and since he's been living in a dog crate with Joey, who is a she (boy am I hoping!), should I find them a home together? They seem very close and bonded and me not knowing a thing about chicken relationships, lol, I'm not sure if splitting them up is a good thing or not. Any ideas or suggestions?
