Roosting at night for the first time tonight ! I'm so proud ! :yesss:

I slipped 8 - day old chicks under broody Tarasita about 6 weeks ago, and when I closed the flock up tonight, they were roosting with momma in the back room of the coop not, underneath her on the floor like usual. I have seen them practicing during the day lately, so I figured it wouldn't be long.

She's such a good mom. I'm not sure where her tail went though .....:idunno

Just wanted to share .....

Their very cute! :love Is she molting? That may be why she is losing her tail feathers. Check her for pin feathers coming up underneath. In this time she'll need some extra protein. If not, other chickens may be pulling out her tail feathers and you may need to separate her and the chicks somewhere else (assuming you have other chickens besides her and the chicks).

Thank you !

I do believe most of my flock of 11 adult birds are starting to molt ..... Feathers everywhere.

Also, momma is in the top 3 of the pecking order ..... I've witnessed no aggressive behavior aimed at her. However, she is a fierce mother, and runs off any curious hens. Nobody messes with Tarasita and her babies ! :D

I left her with the rest of the flock the entire time, she had the littles out and about within a day or two, integrating them flawlessly with the other birds. I'm still amazed at how easily this all went, especially for a first time mother.

So glad to hear it!
