Hi guys,
I’ve got two 5 1/2 weeks old spitz. The first 3 pics are from the same chick. Darker saddles, slightly bigger than the second and thicker legs. No signs of wattles development yet. Is it too early to tell? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!
Pablo

Appears to be a pullet.

I have 19 1-month old Appenzeller Spitzhauben chicks purchased sexed as pullets, but I'm sure 1 is a cockerel. He's the 2nd smallest of the 19 chicks and one of the shyest. When scared he hides under the girls. Most of the pullets are curious and come first to investigate something new in their brooder, they stand tall and peck my hand when my hand comes near them, and they have a fan shaped tail. I've seen them stare down and fight among themselves to establish pecking older. At less than 4 weeks I was able to tell that he's a cockerel not due to his behaviour, which isn't very cock like, but because of differences between the way he looks and the way the pullets look. He has no black markings on the feathers on the back of his neck, has a lot of light yellow on back of head, neck and chest, and his tail is shaped different, not as fan like. Now that he is over 5 weeks old his Crest is pointing back instead of forward like the pullets, and he's grown extra feathers over his shoulder blades, and has the beginning of wattles. In the photos I took last week you can see the differences between him and the pullets.

Sadly, I can't keep him, if I can't sell him along with some of the girls, I'll have to find someone that can take him.

Anyway, I hope thishelps you with sexing your Appenzeller Spitzhauben chick.
