I'm a newbie, but have fallen in love w/my Sicilian Buttercup and my Light Brahma. Both are about 6 weeks old and I've been giving them field trips outside this past week as temps have gotten nice. Outside they've not yet tried to roll in dirt or take a bath. They are still living in a brooder box I have and I've put DE in their shavings to help prevent mites, etc. Today I shoveled out a hole in dirt in my yard and mixed in sand and DE and tried to get the chicks to get in and take a bath, but no luck. Do they have to be taught? How often will they do this? When will they start?

They will eventually do it on their own, I don't think there is any easy way to teach them. Out of my 4 - 7 week old chicks only my 5 week old cochin takes dust baths, the others aren't interested. Chickens are weird!
