6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Have tossed 5 eggs, one is questionable. Will check it again in a few days. :) Not too bad.

that is great news!

Need help! Hen kicked egg coming out of the nest box a while ago causing the egg to hit the side of the nest box. The egg now has a thin crack and a dint in it. Is there a way to save the egg or not?

Nail polish can be used to seal up the cracks. Candle it though to see if it is fertile--It is on day 7 of incubation?

Got my candling done. I culled 11 that were seeping. 3 were shipped SFH, 5 were LO that had been sitting in a bucket any which way in the fridge for I don't know how long, the last 3 were LO that were collected and stored/turned properly (collected on 11/20, 12/1, and 12/11). So far only 16 with very clearly visible veining (10 SFH from my hen and 6 of the shipped SFH). That leaves 28 I have to recheck at 10 days. Some of those I'm pretty certain are clears, others I just don't know. Some of them glow very red, but no veining that I can see. A couple of the LOs that are left have something going on in there, but I don't know if they are still going or not. Keeping my fingers crossed till I check again at day 10.

Good job getting the seeping eggs out of there.

I am hoping the rest are developing for you!

Candled and tossed 4 very clear non-starters. Pretty high fertility for this time of year and chilly weather. There were a few I wasn't entirely sure on, but I left them. I always pencil sketch the air sac edge onto the shell so I can be sure they are progressing correctly next time I candle. Anyone else do that?

that leaves 38 eggs in the bator and only 6 chicks spoken for out of this first hatch. :sick. DH is being quite the enabler. He keep telling me to set more eggs. I had to remind him that the turner is full. I told him that to continuous hatch I'd need a dedicated hatcher. Now he wants to make one. Pretty sure that will end up being this weekend's project so I can get it up and running and test how well it holds humidity and temp. If it holds well, I might hatch port of my HAL eggs in there - not all of them though - just in case.

I'm thinking of of taking a a big thick styro cooler like they use to ship fish to pet stores and a 150 watt rough service bulb and some hardware cloth to make the thing. I kinda want to get a dollar store photo frame to make a window in the top cause I just gotta be able to see what is going on during hatching. Pretty sure I can make it for next to free with mostly stuff we already have. Anyone got any good tips who have built one?

Got the top back on the LG.. Which is a miracle within itself given my fruitfly attention span.

Eggs got nice and cool- apparently it's 70* in my closet I learned. I'm excited, hope this hatch does SO good!
