6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

For daily cooling: how important is consistency of timing? Is it okay if the time is different each day? I'm gonna assume no since that would be least convenient..

Just so I'm clear, I got a new flashlight (an el cheapo) and did a random candling. First off, it works better than the candling box I made and lit with a $10.00 light bulb! In fact, it works so well that even with the brooder light on behind me, I could still see through the egg fairly well!

So well in fact, that 1 of my blue eggs looked clear except for the yolk inside and the other has a staggered looking ring all the way around it.

Please confirm my fear or put my mind at ease, is the staggered looking ring a blood ring?

And of the blue egg, should the yolk be so visible? I couldn't see any embryo in it at all and it's day 9 but again, the brooder light was behind me so the room wasn't completely dark.

Candle again in the dark just to make sure but sounds like a clear & a blood ring to me.

I am amazed!

16 of 24 Trader Joes Fertile eggs are developing--I spent $2.99 a dozen for those eggs! The expiration day on them was 12-31--It should have been a hatch date on the carton!

The Blue Australorp eggs have 8 of 11 with veins and they were shipped!

Why are people trying to hatch Trader Joe's eggs? Is it to get leghorns?

Will do when the babies go to bed. At night, they instinctively go into their little brooder house in their brooder box where it is warmer. They have three lights in the brooder box. 1 in their house and two in the brooder exercise yard. (The brooder is fairly big lol )

Anyway, at night, when they go into the house, I can turn the exercise lights off long enough to candle but I was afraid that would be the answer. Thanks, I'll post again about it later.

They sound like a clear and a blood ring. Blood rings are from bacteria getting to the embryo so it was fertile. The blue egg sounds like it was not fertile.

You should see veins on day 9.
