6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Easter Hatchalong 2015!!

Easter is on April 5 and, in the past anyway, eggs were set to hatch the day before so that chicks would be on-hand for Easter. By my calculations, that would mean chicken eggs would be set on Saturday, March 14!! Plan early for eggs!!

Yay, for Spring!!

I am already on the hunt for eggs for the Easter HAL! If I can't find any, maybe I'll set a bunch of Trader Joes eggs. Some people seem to have luck with those.

My daughter had this as an assigned experiment for her science. It has been weeks. And the eggs are still in the vinegar, still retaining a thin layer of shell. I bet it works on a thin shelled egg. But not ones from our hens. Nice thick shells from these girls.

She talked with her teacher and instead watched YouTube videos about the remainder of the experiment to finish her report. Lol
I might have more to do with the bloom being washed off of store eggs. Home eggs still hat that coating.

What are you using to candle . My blue and green eggs are very hard to see. I usually don't even candle but curious what your using
I'm using the Incu-Bright cool light egg candler from incubator warehouse. Its super bright, white light, and doesn't get hot. So far I have been able to see into all my eggs pretty well.

whew...idk...steep
$500 i think ....seems reasonable, how else will she learn her lesson.

i use a free cheap 3 bulb LED flashlight i got from the gas station....probly costs 50cents on ebay lol
But it works great, is super bright and doesnt get hot at all.

Candling was SO exciting! I still can't tell very well with my 12 Black Copper Maran OR my 12 Welsummer eggs... BUT... 14 out of 18 Silkies have made it past Day 7! I am super excited!

I have a chick from an earlier clutch that has hatched four days late...with a twisted neck, legs, and toes... I'm trying everything I can for tonight and then rushing to the store tomorrow for some vitamen supplements.

My Janoel 48 is pretty much full! After the four silkie eggs were removed, I put part of my dozen pure bred bantam assortment inside! I'm also excited for my Ayam Cemanis, which are due to hatch by Dec. 28th. Such an exciting time!!!

I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I love candling and seeing those little dots wiggle around! It is so hard not to candle every day!
I hope your "twisted" chick makes it. If she does you should name her Pretzle!
Good luck on your Dec 28 hatch!
I agree, it's so exciting, I love it!
