I think most people don't know unless they've delved into the deep abyss of *trying* to.. Um, procreate. For some it comes easily (lucky ducks

) and they don't have to research such disturbing ideas, and then finding themselves considering trying it.

We are in the still trying category and I am surprised because family and friends do offer up all sorts of helpful suggestions...but I just don't think I could do that.

Oh man, I googled that egg white thing. It was what I suspected they were suggesting. Sounds a bit well gross. But might be worth a try and I definitely have plenty of eggs.

Okay. Seriously? Where have you been all the years I've been here?

I've locked down at day 18 the last couple hatches thinking, "okaayyyy but they really don't look ready for lockdownnnn..."

And those hatches. Were. Pitiful.

This time I will listen to my inner hen.

I have been on the hatch a longs but mostly the heritage and some of the social threads.

The important thing with hatching is to make it work for you and your schedule. Some of the old timers have pointed out that BYC has invented a lot of things--including lockdown. The concept is a solid one since a lot of us hatching mess with the eggs too much during the last three days of incubation and opening the incubator too much is not good for hatch rate. It is fine to open some though.

The important thing about day 18 is that the eggs do not need to be turned any more then. Humidity can be raised then but it is a trade off. I incubate in the Brinsea octagon 40 and hatch in one of my Genesis 1588 incubators. The Genesis will not hold humidity at 65% for more than 3 days so I have to add water--which is not the best thing to do if there are pips. I nearly always wait until day 19 but there are pips sometimes.

Just figure out what is best for you though.
