i have a 6wk old EE that is either taking over the roo role in my new pullet flock or is a roo, i think. he/she has begun charging my wife when she enters the coop and charging the fence when my lab is at it. the EE then stands there and stares the dog down. this bird is the bulley of the flock for sure.

i'm trying to find out if i have a roo to rehome or just an aggressive hen. anyone know some tips on sexing a 6 week old chick?

thanks,

seth

Aggressive at 6 weeks! Wow, I'd cull it just because of the temperment. Now, I've had chicks rush at me just because they want to be first in line for food, but if it is attacking at 6 weeks I'd reserve a place in freezer camp for the little beast.

I have 2 8-week-old EEs who, at 6 weeks, had combs that were significantly larger and redder than another EE hatchmate's. One was picking on a little Serama hatchmate. It was the comb that made me suspect rooster-hood more than their aggression. I put both EEs out in the henhouse until I can find someone who wants them. The 21-week-old ladies don't seem to mind 'em and they're definitely in their place now!

Post a picture. Perhaps that would help.

I would not keep an aggressive chick either. No way, no how. I heard of some people having great success with seperating the chick from the others for about a week. Perhaps that will work if you want to keep the chick.

here's the pic. i don't see anything that really stands out physically to make me think roo, just behaviorally.

Post some pics of predators like hawks, coons, and foxes in its pen so maybe it will grow up and be ready to take its aggression out on them.

Do you have a picture of its comb in better light? Its face and comb look like kind of pinkish in the picture. EEs are so hard to tell. I think our welsummer may be a roo.

Wow aggressive at 6 weeks. I am slightly scared when my chicks become aggressive. So far they just like to run up to me and then they just stop and eat. Except for our Cornish Rock X roo, but I can't wait till I eat him so no hard feelings.
