7 dust ?

Question: I want to put some down in the dust bath area, but...

I have 2 broodies that use that area also. If they bathe in it, will it hurt the embryos in their eggs?

If it's too much of a risk, I guess I'll dust the rest while they are on the roost. They will shake a bit off in the coop though.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have twelve broody chickens that are setting on their second clutch of pea eggs ( I pull the chicks as they are pipping), and I am pretty sure that they are lousy with lice. Would it hurt to shake some seven dust on them in the nest box?

I found another thread about Seven Dust here. And this bit in Wikipedia:

The development of the carbamate insecticides has been called a major breakthrough in pesticides. The carbamates do not have the persistence of chlorinated pesticides. Although toxic to insects, carbaryl is detoxified and eliminated rapidly in vertebrates. It is neither concentrated in fat nor secreted in milk, so is favored for food crops, at least in the US.[3] It is the active ingredient in Carylderm shampoo used to combat head lice until infestation is eliminated.

Not legal in a bunch of countries, but we use it for head lice? I just want to sprinkle some in their dirt every now and then so the birds are comfortable and not have illness due to those pests.

Just going to look for research on effects of the chemical on embryos....

ETA: There is much research on this. Carbaryl delivered through the shell via acetone and sesame oil 1 mg to 10 mg some mortality and in another study limb/feet development problems with .5 ml carbaryl injection on 5th and 6th day of incubation.

Those are big doses. I think it would probably be okay, esp later in incubation after everything is fully formed. You are not trying to get it through the shell or inject it.

I think I'll dust em on the roost this time, just to be safe and leave the broodies alone for now. Maybe just a touch on the back of their head and back if I see anything. I havent but I'll look closer at them in the dark tonight.
