My Buff Orpington went broody last week so I ordered some turkey hatching eggs for her. I got 7 and put her on them this evening. Then I did a little extra reading here on the forums and read somewhere that if there are too many she won't be able to turn them all. But then someone else said something about a basic rule: 12 of their own eggs, 4 goose eggs, and 9 turkey eggs. So that post made me feel okay.
She settled right down on them about a couple of hours ago. I just want everything to be perfect (well, as perfect as I can make it, anyway).
If 7 is truly too many, I can give a couple to a broody cochin, but I'd rather not if I think it will be safe.
Just nervous, I guess. ;-)
Thanks!

I put 2 turkey eggs, 3 guinea eggs and 3 duck eggs under a hen (several turkeys, a few guineas and a duck were all laying in the same nest). I didn't realize that she also had 7 or 8 chicken eggs under her also. The chicks have hatched and we are awaiting the turkey, guinea and ducklings. She did really well with that many under her.

Thank you! She's been on them 3 days now and seems to be covering all of them. My Cochin hatched out 2 turkeys yesterday and at least one more today and she's not finished.
This is my first time with turkeys and I have so, so many questions. There don't seem to be many people that visit the turkey forum often, and I've done quite a few searches about turkey issues and don't find very much.
I had a heck of a time learning about what to feed them as chicks. Medicated? Unmedicated? Turkey or Game? yikes! And my local feed store, the Coop, and Tractor Supply don't carry unmedicated, and only the Coop carries starter - medicated.
So I just bought medicated game fowl feed and I guess it won't hurt my hen.
Anyway, thanks for responding. I'm going to keep reading and asking questions, I guess!
Now I want to know about their personalities as poults and if they differ from chicks. So far, they don't seem too smart ;-) Each one that has hatched, I've found sort of just laying in front of the hen in the hay cold and flat. I've really had to keep a close eye on them, and slip it under her wing when I find one. It's 3 so far. I actually found the first one completely outside the coop on the ground! It was so cold I thought it wouldn't make it. That was last night and now it's fuzzy and perky.
I've put so much into this - from buying shipped eggs, building a safe, cozy "maternity ward," reading and everything else, I'm just nervous.

And obviously chatty ;-) So, thanks for the response!

How is everything going? Did everyone make it? It is so hard when first doing something like this, after awhile it is not so bad but I still get anxious and swear that I'm not helping anyone out of the shell. Then I have a turkey that works and works to get out of his shell and I can't bear to see him suffer. lol Hope things are going well.
