Hello again!
The general consensus at 5 weeks was that my beautiful black Orpington (Betty) was a cockerel. However, since then my buff (same age) has overtaken “Betty” in terms of comb and wattle. Betty’s comb is now much more like the buff we think is a pullet (not in photos), although the pullet does not have any wattles going on whereas Betty does - although they stopped growing after 4 weeks.
Saddle feathers I read are not terribly reliable indicators at this age, but I have included some photos.
So - looking at Betty’s comb, wattles, feathers and stance, what do people think? Bettie or Bertie? (Buff is included in pics for comparison).
Thank you for all your thoughts! I know I post this same question regularly - the excitement of my first hatch 🐣

I'm still slightly inclined to pullet, as my BO cockerel at that age was very obvious but could just be a slow developing cockerel.
Do please keep updating, it's very interesting, and useful for me!
She/he is fascinating - wattles and a comb sprouted enthusiastically at 4 weeks but then just stopped. I’m starting to think pullet, too. Have you got any pics of your boy at 7 weeks?

I saw a YT video on how to sex chickens and it seems reeally easy to me. The guy turned the chick upside down (after the baby calmed down a bit). He had the chicks head between his index finger and second finger - the middle one and he exposed the vent. He did this by moving his thumb and index finger in opposite directions. The lil vent popped out (best way to explain it); not overly much and the chick was in no distress. He then used a toothpick to point and said when you see the bubble (he showed in the vid) then it is a cockerel. Easy peasey. No biggie, no guessing, no waiting months to know the dealio. If you want a link I will try and find it. But again he is on YT on what to do. Simply search "Sexing chickens".

Hi - yes, I’ve seen that and REALLY wish I’d seen it when they were small enough to hold in one hand and manipulate - but they are getting big now. I might try it after a few drinks one night! It is a really good video; thanks for the reminder x

Based on what I'm seeing with my Black Australorps, I'm leaning towards pullet for your BO. Then again, I know next to nothing about raising chickens, since this is my first flock.

I find myself having anxiety over determining what sex they are. I love them all but I can't keep roosters here :(

It's called vent sexing and I believe can only be done on chicks no older then a couple of days, and if done incorrectly can injure the chick.
So ideally get it taught to you in person.
