I have been letting my 7 week olds play in a dog kennel during the day and at dusk I bring them back to their brooder. It has been real warm, like 60-70's. The coop is getting built soon so I have been trying to wean them off the heat lamp since they wont have it in the coop. Well, when they all went back in their brooder they were all huddled in a corner stepping on one another. Almost like they were cold or something. But there is no way they were cold. The tempature was proble 60 at the time. Why would they do this?

Do they have a roost, I think it's just part of them being prey animals, Since they have no "tree" to escape to, they huddle.

Every time I put my 8 wk olds some where new (like the garden area during the day or where I am doing weeding) They huddle for a while then eventually the will start spreading out and pecking at the ground. Once they find out I took them to the grocery store for chickens! It is funny when they figure it all out .

I have seen my chicks do the same thing; and when I put on the heat lamp they act content. I do think they get chilled sometimes. See if the heat lamp makes a difference, if they are scared they will stay huddled. GL
