How CUTE!! Santa Silkie!!

C'mon,
It is an awfully random number......
39% and all.....

How much harder is raising quail than chickens? They one thing holding me back from trying them was the cage set up. Is it something that can be built? Feed efficiency? Can they be raised in an enclosed area such as a barn or is sunshine needed?
Also the 39% not so random that number follows me everywhere. Another one today was the package the wife had shipped here yep 39 written on all sides. No rhyme or reason. Just hoping for a better hatch rate than that. Too funny.

I gave up on my goofy new broody. She wants to peck me and protect her eggs but won't keep her butt on the nest at night. I took her eggs and the them in the bator. If she's still sorta sitting and acting broody if any hatch, I'll try to give them to her then. I don't have time to put her butt on the nest every night and check her 30 times a day to make sure she's doing it right lol

It's easier than chickens I think.
This will be my first round hatching them though.
Cages you should probably build yourself as they can be expensive.
I am using a 3 pen rabbit hutch I got for free off Craigslist.
It's about 4-6 sq. ft each pen.
I didn't build it, or it would have been wired for eggs to roll out, course it was for rabbits.
I'm lazy, so I didn't rewire it.
Feed efficiency is all about keeping it in the feeder.
Seriously.
They fling their heads when eating, So I place their feeders inside a Jug/Bucket with holes cut in the side.
They have to stick their whole heads in there, IF you don't do this,
You will probably be wasting over 50% feed. As long as feed isn't being wasted, they are very efficient.

Enclosed areas are fine, but you'll want I hear 14 hr light cycles to stimulate laying.
I hear over 16 hour cycles they can sometimes become aggressive and fight/kill one another.
I did this with a $4 Indoor timer(which has been working outside for months) and a salvaged refrigerator light socket.

I hope your hatch rate is OVER 9 THOUSAND!

Finally!! Despite the delay and not being marked as eggs or fragile

none were broken. Whew! No rolling air cells, just some saddles.

This group of 11 are blue/black/splash copper Marans, blue/black/splash Cochins (standards), and Mille Bantam Cochins.

They will go in the bator today to join the others!
That's fantastic! I'm so glad your eggs "finally" got to you.

Thank you! I am excited about the dark spotted ones, not only are they pretty but they have "blue" feathered birds in them. I believe the greens are frizzles maybe splash ones.
you don't have to wait! I just hatched out a bunch of these. the grey in this pic

2 upper ones were from spotted brown eggs 2 lower ones from green eggs.

Blue.

I love blue birds!

I'm envious.

Are we supposed to post a pic of the eggs we set ?

No Quail Rails so this is what I came up with...
Cut end of water bottles with the caps removed, the 16.9 size.
The bottles were staying in there the past couple days fine no problem turning, Until the eggs were added today.
I hope it works out. It's a GQF Hova Bator 2362N, manual wafer forced air.
I'm hoping the forced air helps because the eggs sit a little higher....
What i deemed as the more desirable ones I set in the leftover rail spaces.

It does seem to be holding ok...
NO, this is not the only thermo in the unit
I also have another manual (bulb type) AccuRite thermo in there too.
And in the empty space next to the turner another AccuRite Digital Thermo/Hygro with 24 HR High/Low.
Great minds think alike. Stacking...nice!

Never again on the jalapeno honey drank.
It set my rear on fire plus constipation the next morning. Should have known better than to buy "bird dog" brand whiskey

Cute. Could a hat be worked in also?
I think there is a hood on it. Looks like it.
Totally making this for my rooster ( after I somehow manage to make everyone's Christmas gifts, finish photos, and complete my curtains)

That is an awesome costume and a very amazing bird for wearing it...lol!! My husband suggested we make little New Year's Hat's for our new chicks (jokingly of course) Now he's horrified because I thought it would be a good idea!
