7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Up your humidity. Is the egg porous??? What's your humidity been holding at???

My humidity is about 30 percent, but some of the eggs have smallish air cells. I have had a hard time in the past getting these eggs to loose enough moisture but most of them are looking good. I put the one egg on a little plate so that the fan can't blow on it. I had forgotten about that, it works because my fan is down below. :)

Incubate to the average of your eggs--You do not want to hurt the hatch because of one egg that may be wonky. It may not hatch because there may be something wrong with it.

That's a good point. I only have a few eggs so...I would try to do my best to keep it regulated...but if you have a lot of eggs......go with what Ron says. ;)

Yes, I think this one egg has a pretty thin shell and most of them are really thick. It might be alright on its little plate, we'll see : ). I still have 13 left.

I can imagine easier on the hands! I used to milk goats..can't imagine doing that many cows!

I was trying to answer and my computer blipped out....I meant Jersies and it came out heresies....

I used to make a lot of yogurt. Also cottage cheese which mostly fed the chickens. If you let cottage cheese warm too long it turns into squeaky rubber balls, but the poultry loved it! Now I really want Kefir!

Wow

Chickens are enough for me now.

I just came back from milking the cows again for the evening.
And running a few errands.
Not enough time in the day, even with the solstice.

As soon as we get 30 hours in a day, We'll be straight.
Guess where I will be in six hours???

I just set it on the counter for a day or two,
The chickens love the Clabber! (I keep the whey) I'll give em yogurt as it yields really well, ounce for ounce.
Just drop some of your last yogurt(always keep some handy) in with the milk and it makes real nice.
There are SO many thing you can do with milk/cream,
I just don't have that 30 hours in a day yet!

Crazy day: went to visit famiy a couple days earlier than I had planned (i am a genius and sliced my leg with a saw and ended up with 8 stitches)so had to bring the incubator with me. Lots of fun hobbling across walmart on crutches to buy an inverter so the bator didn't get too cold. Everything is on lockdown now that I am at my sister's place. Lost 1 egg on the trip, but it was a green egg that never started developing that I couldn't see into. Luckily it didn't explode-just cracked. Ah the adventures of hatching (by the way saw horses were invented for a reason, guess I figured out what that was...)

Well...this is my first year with Silkies & my broody is a bearded one, but I also have a non bearded pullet, too. I don't know if it makes a difference but my bearded went broody in October, which I was able to "break" her of. But she went broody again in November & I wasn't able to break her, so I bought her some eggs. The non bearded has not acted like she might go broody at all. I hope I didn't jinx her by just saying that. They are both just so cute!!
Cute photo. :) I've had mostly bearded silkies. I now have a non muffed silkie. I am loving her. I think it's a her at this point. Not sure it would really make a difference in whether or not they go broody more. I am pretty sure, that most type of bantam will go broody more often than a LF. :)

Wow, sorry about the leg. Saws can be wickedly fast to get you.
