7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I love this for candling my eggs, from the turner/carton.
I lost mine and had to buy another.
I wanted to let yall know the combo is awesome and the smaller one runs off one AAA and is GREAT for quail eggs!
For those of you who hatchem!

My husband just bought this flashlight - and we took the lens out to see how it candles - AMAZING. Of course, he needs the flashlight for work, so I need to buy another one for myself. I second the recommendation!!!

Today is lockdown day! I can't wait til my fiance gets home from work so we can candle our eggs one last time and take them out of the egg turner so that they can hatch! This is my first time incubating so everything is new and fun. We started with 18 but now we have 14 that look good so far.

I do have a question about vaccinating my chicks when they are hatched. Should i? If so what do i vaccinate them for and where can i buy it? What about the medicated chick feed?
I've only ever bought chicks from our local farm store and they are supposed to already be vaccinated for stuff right?

I personally don't vaccinate but to each their own. I just prefer a natural immunity.

LOCKDOWN DAY! Everyone get your humidity up, pack your candlers away, remove your turners, and get your fingers out!

Why's that?
shipped eggs need to be handled less because they have often been damaged by shipping. The embryos will be working to correct the damage--it is like healing for us. The extra jarring can either kill them or damage them more. After a week or so they will be more like not shipped eggs.

Hello Everyone! I'm ---, and my name is Mirajane, but I'd like it if you called me Mira.I set eggs to hatch on the 1st. I just joined today, but I was wondering if I could still participate? I don't need any prizes, I just wanted to know if I could hatch with everyone and be counted. I wanted my chicks to hatch on New Years, and didn't even know about this site until today.
Hi Mira,

We those under 18 are not supposed to post their age.

Welcome!

How many did you set?

Oh yeh. I try not to handle them much shipped or not, but I candle from the turner/carton anyway. Especially after dropping one last batch. That taught me.
Quick.

No problem, if you see it it means it's time to lock down the eggies.

So I know there could be other factors as well but my 7 duck eggs that quit on day 23 did have slopping air cells. They were in the perfect place. Could they have quit because I didn't put them in lockdown early and raised the humidity? I thought they were slopping early but I didn't think to lock down early.

I think I might be a little bit stressed out. I finally decided that there is no "good" time to make bread. So into the kitchen I went. I needed two cups of sourdough. I have that all ready to go. I also need four cups of flour. With the voices screaming in my head, I measured out the sourdough and began adding in flour to make even more sourdough. Aaaaaaand I just realized that if I didn't really mess up until I added water without measuring exactly. I could have continued on with the dough. And now I'm realizing that I'm not new to baking. I can...
So anyway, I then tried to connect to the Internet using the baby monitor.
I'm going to get Duckling up (she's playing in her crib) and save my bread. The eggs are locked down. Though we all agree that they look like quitters.

And its Hi - Ho - Hey, Eggs go into lockdown today!

25 eggs on lockdown. 2 Infertile an early quitter. The infertile eggs came from a trade... the early quitter was a porous egg I probably should have never set in the first place... Last time most of my losses came AFTER lockdown.

Trying to get the humidity up while keeping the eggs dry!

May everyone have a good hatch!
