7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

So this am i had 3 pipped... now i have 1 black lavender cross orpington hatched and 6 pipped total excited to see what i have by morning!!:ya
Now what is some of your guys protocols on chicks in the hatcher. Im affraid to move the chick out cause of ahrinkwrapping the others. How long do u wait till u move to the chick box? Today is day 20 for me

Just finished canning a 15 bean soup... now I can finally go to bed.

Checked on the eggs one last time - still 1 pip from about 12 hours ago - no progress. Not hearing any peeps - but seeing a lot of wiggles...

wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle ;-)

Looking forward to see what the morning brings!

I have a new pressure canner--I need to can some bean soup too!

Wow congrats to everyone with pips and new chicks and ducklings!!

I'm still waiting impatiently for the first group to pip. I set these on the 11th around noon eastern time. I had 3/6 fertile, one early quitter so 2 EE mixes remain.

The brown layer shipped eggs set the same day were all duds. All 15 were clears. No development :-( The breeder offered to send me another shipment in the spring which is nice.

Group 2 locks down Friday (these were my shipped eggs that got stuck at a mail sorting facility over a weekend) I have 5/12 that are viable after a rough and delayed trip. Those were allowed in the HAL (thanks, Ron!) but won't hatch until the 3rd.

Then I had 2 others that somehow were slipped into the bator lol. Those are test eggs from the 5 month old splash copper Marans in my avatar and a black sex link hen. They are looking great on day 12

Waiting is hard!

I have another baby, that looks just like the other baby!
How sweet!

Increased humidity to 65% and set my eggs in modified cardboard egg cartons. My eggs were shipped from CastleRock, Colorado & North Carolina so I have saddle shaped & detached crazy looking aircells. A few are rocking! R-com says 60-70%? Seventeen going into lockdown, the last Bielefelder egg didn't make it. Hope I get to see them hatch out.

good luck!

Good for you! I take mine out once they are somewhat dry. That way they don't bang into all the other eggs. It normally takes 5 seconds for me to get it out. And the humidity bounces back almost immediately.

2 hatched 1 zipping, and 6 pipped.

They are looking good!
Check the eggs for the 48th time today all 3 pipe and hear peeps. One piped the wrong end but it making noise and trying to get out. Want to help but don't want the others to be shrink wrapped.
You are doing the right thing!

I had a Delaware egg pipped at the wrong end last year--The chick literally smashed itself out like the hulk! It was amazing to see.

I have one egg that has been pipped since this afternoon. Little worried, it is quite a ways down from the pencil line. I'm just hoping that it drew back that far during the two days in lock down.
It is way too soon to be worried. The chick is likely fine.

Two of mine are out! 25 eggs left - can't wait to see what hatches!
Hatching has started! Usually a hatch will be over about 24 hours after it starts.

Ok, i worried about everyone pipping and I was days away. Well, I stopped at my house to candle some 7 day eggs and one of my HAL chicks pipped. Yeah!!

But, i was very surprised when I was candling my 7 day old eggs...it was chirping like mad. Plus 2 other eggs are way further along than 7 days.

I was very disorganized when i first put eggs in my 'bator. Whan hatching my Christmas chicks in a 2nd bator, one of the ones i thought was a 1/1 chick started hatching in the egg turner 'bator. I THOUGHT i had put a 1/1 hatch in lockdown and missed a 12/26 egg. Well now it appears i missed some HAL eggs. The one that was chirping, i moved into lockdown. The other 2 im just going to watch.

I have learned I need to be WAY more organized at the start.
Use a permanent marker and write the set date on each egg.

I have had the same problem when staggering hatches. The date on the egg really helps.
