7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

You guys are still here?!?! :P

Popping in to see how everyone's NYD chickies are doing. I somehow lost 2 of mine, so I'm down to 12. I went out and checked them the other day and everyone was fine. Came out an hour later and 2 of them were just dead :/ I have no idea what happened :hit But, everyone else made it through a very, very cold night last night (brooder is outside) so that's good. And...
I woke up to 3 chicks this morning and lots of pips from the second batch of eggs I set. I also put 25 more in the incubator the day before yesterday and my broody sitting on 10 is due to hatch hers on the 17th :hide

One of my Svarthöna pullets decided to start laying yesterday

even though the temperatures have been dropping drastically the last couple of days. We reached 70 degrees just a few days ago and today when I woke up the temperature was 9 degrees!

This particular pullet happens to be in a project pen, not because she is a part of it, but because she grew up with those that are. I'm thinking about putting the eggs in the incubator to test my cockerel's fertility (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

). So, who thinks a chocolate, fibro, possible woolly carrier, green egg layer would be cool?

(Really, I need another project like I need a hole in the head

I have 4 eggs in lock down, and all four have pips this morning. Only had the one last night, was a bit worried because today is the day. Guess they want to hatch on hatch day. :) I put these in to see how my big boy outside was doing with fertilizing eggs..guess he's doin good!

I have the small premier1 plate and two of the small brinsea eco glow plates. Premier1 sells an extra small that is for 15 chicks too.

Have you used yours during at or below freezing temps?
We are having a cold snap but I want these chicks outside asap.

It can get to about 35 in the Garage--They do fine.

Others have reported using the premier down to freezing. Some will add a light on the coldest nights though.

I do not know about the Premier1, but do not use the Brinsea in temps below about 60 deg.

ETA - You will blow the transformer on the plug. I know this from experience.

the Premier1 is so nice!

It does not have a transformer.
