7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Are your hens from the store eggs last hatch laying well now or has winter slowed them down? discovered my Trader Joes are only 31/2 months not 4
39 out of 45 is awesome.
I have 5 of them and they have slowed down a little bit but they are still laying between 3 and 4 a day.

They are great chickens.

Nice I was hoping for good layers. My Orpington's which are supposed to do good in winter have been duds. I think the gal I got them from was more into show than production
I have the leghorns (Trader Joes)in with some Legbars I hatched from neighbors about the same time.

I keep thinking the chicks should be hatching any day now. Has it really only been a week?! And those duck eggs... They had better all hatch!
Speaking of ducks, the mom and dad have been escaping their pen all day!

I have fixed everywhere I think they are getting out. Fortunately, it is late enough that they are locked in for the night.

Those eggs are generating heat! Just caught my bator at 102°. I know it wasn't that high for long but this always happens once those babies start developing in there :) just over week and we'll be getting those hatchers prepped and ready!

Anything small will work, shot glass is just an easy size to compare... a 1/4c measure would work too... I dunno if sea salt works the same, should ask Ron or Sally about that... was always told to use non-Iodized salt so that's all I've used... ziploc just needs to be big enough to set the container of salt and hygrometer in side by side and sealed...

Ok, I tried this test. At the 12 hour mark, the Hydrometer showed 55%, not 75%. So, I know the new digital one is wrong. Is there a way to re-calibrate it? Or, do I return it and get another?

Thanks!!

A good incubator should be able to adjust for heat from the developing eggs.

Some can be re calibrated buy most cannot.

Return it.

It's a Styrofoam hova bator forced air with electronic thermostat (I forget model number lol). It's usually good on its own but I tend to run it a bit warm already. The temp in the room has gotten a bit chilly so I think it may have over compensated a tad with warming back up...maybe? Sounds good anyway lol. Temps are under control though and since it's officially day 7, I'm candling later ;)
