7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I'm totally out.  I candled, day 11, and all I got was glowing eggs and in the lighter shelled ones all I could see was yellow yolk swishing around in there.  I took a leap and cracked open two, and nope nothing.  I cracked open all 24 and NO development in ANY of them.  My guess is that either my new incubator spiked and killed day 1 or 2. OR my Roo, while a great dancer and chicken stomped, is too young, 9 months old.  I have seen bullseyes when using eggs for cooking... so who knows.

Bummed, but may set more.  Waiting to see if the lady I was setting for wants them 10 days late or just wants to wait until later in the spring.

REally bummed.
I wish I could split with you. I set extra because of all the losses I heard about and now I have extra if hatch goes well as 52 of 54 were developing at candling. It is funny how things go.

Candled again tonight. All of my lavender Orpington's eggs are clear. No surprise there as rooster is more interested in eating than mating. However 17 of 18 shipped eggs have something in them. One clear and one that might be developing a blood ring. Most have saddle air sacs and they may be too large but none loose. I Haven't had this before in shipped eggs. Once I had zero hatch from shipped ones. I will temper this with the fact that my candler is not the best. Yea!!!!!!:weee

Sorry about your lavenders. Sounds like things are going great with your shipped eggs. I hope they all hatch!!

I am so sorry!  No fun!  I hope your rooster figures things out!!

Jessimom,
That is weird that your rooster is not mating the girls. I have a 5 month old rooster and I am getting fertile eggs. Maybe change rooster?

I think we have two different roosters not worth their salt. wthrLady and mine. At least WthrLady's is acting like he's doing something. Mines not even doing that he's almost 9 months. I do hope he gets it figured out. I'm thinking I'll move him and his ladies closer to the Roos that have it down. :lau

Lucky you for having the experience of exemplary shipped eggs! A goodly percentage of shipped eggs I've received have huge saddle sacs.... Which is not surprising if you've ever seen the drop off of postal conveyor belts. The good news is that they hatch pretty well if not scrambled. If you hatch in cartons, just make sure to tip the largest air portion towards the sky (like a face feeling the sun) on lockdown. Good luck!
