7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I am so sorry. I understand though. All ten of my first duck eggs were clear. I had some chicken eggs too. They look like quitters, but I still have hope. When my duck eggs were finally fertile, I added five more. They aren't looking too good either. Fingers crossed for both of us! :fl

My fingers are crossed for yours too! I really hope you get some to hatch!

Well, my dunce moment was 100%. On the night of the 4th I rushed to get my incubator out and threw in 12 eggs so that I could actively tag along in this hatch-along. After sitting down and slowly taking in what I just did I realized I was a week early. Well, they all hatched out yesterday...all 12! :D So now I have 12 peepers and a turning octagon incubator. :) I haven't candled all the eggs. So with the 40 eggs left in the bator, I don't know what will happen. If they all hatch out I will be swamped in peeps. This is a much different outcome than last year. I set hundreds of eggs and got maybe 10 (?) peeps. It is amazing what a good bator will do. WoW!

I try to tell people that. I often get grief. Some have told me to not recommend things that are expensive when there are less expensive alternatives.

Then the hatches are bad after spending a lot of money on eggs and shipping.

That goes for buying an incubation thermometer instead of the $5.00 special at Walmart. The two things that are most important for hatching chicks are a good incubator and an incubation thermometer. They do make them and sell them. Brinsea and incubator warehouse have them.

I like the Brinsea spot check.

Thanks I do too! I think I'll give it a couple of hours to double check to make sure there is no movement and it's an actual quitter and I'll toss it. I don't want to compromise the 3 I have going strong. I dislike how this is a guessing game. How they can make it all the way to day 23 and then just stop. I'm just to impatient.
Good luck on rechecking. I agree to toss that if there is no movement like a chick moving. I think I can picture that liquid movement you are talking about. A mushy movement? No good. :/

I checked it and still nothing so my husband put it in a baggy and of course on his way out to the trash he knocked it on the counter when the dogs came running in and it wad green goo inside. Glad I took it out! My other ones I believ are quitters I still didn't see movement but I'm wishful thinking there just isn't much room to see them move in so I left them in there.

Whenever I get those eggs, I just give them a light shake. They'll "slosh" on the inside. Eggs with chicks aren't sloshy. I don't even open them up to check them anymore. Glad you got it out of the 'bator!

Don't worry, I am right in there with you. Final count of those that made it to lockdown was only 2/9 eggs.

First week my incubator was too close to an outside wall. After moving it had a temp spike of 111 degrees. I am just glad one of the two that made it was a cream legbar, and a girl at that! E other is an Ee or OE, boy I think by wing feathers. Glad for two babies. Plus, it would've been rude to not have a chick for my broody after sitting on eggs for so long.

Sorry to hear about your eggs!! How is your temperature? A high temp is the only thing I can imagine making them all quit early.
