What bedding material do you use in the brooder? I've switched to using plain old dirt out of compost pile. For the last three hatches anyways. They love it and far less poopy butts. Dust bathing in days. If I can find dry dirt this time around.
I use sand and mix in de and sweet pdz. Keeps the smell down and i can clean the sand like cat litter. I keep them inside for a week then they go outside into a rabbit hutch so they dont get to smelly in the house when their a little older ill introduce them to my flock which i use sand in there coops too
Relized today is day 18 almost forgot... good thing i set a reminder in my phone. i got 19 eggs out of 29 going into the hatcher and 4 more in the incubator i set a week later. Im excited that all my lavender orpingtons have gone into lock down!! Excited for some fuzzy butts !!e
Ok I'm jealous my lavender Orpington roo is either too young or infertile! He'll be 9 months 1-9-16. Not interested in his girls at all. None of his eggs started this time.
sorry to say that at that age he is probably infertile. But I wouldn't be completely sure... I haven't had that yet... roosters develop at different ages
Sounds good my dirt is mostly decomposed granite so I guess it's more sandy. I'll be adding oak ash this time around. Dirt definitely keeps the smell under control. Mine are in barn pretty much after they are dry. Wife does not like the smell or dust inside. Can't say I blame her.
I have one already in the brooder from my last hatch. He's 3 weeks old so I'm hoping they will go well together. My last hatch which was my first only 1 made it out of 7 eggs. Not to sure what's going on and what is happening for them all to be quitters. Hopefully after this things start turning around or I won't do it again.
