I "think" Elvis is a White Rock. Not a Plymouth Barred Rock, although there will be one in the picture I am showing...dohhhh. But it is the white bird who is the father, Brutus is the Barred Rock, he is pretty useless. None of the girls like him, it is as if they have labeled him "creepy". Elvis was a warmer chick from a hatchery because last years shipment was shipped in really cold weather so they added 9 extra birds for warmth. 6 of them were like Elvis. I asked on here and the consensus was he was a White Rock but after looking at pics now that he is older, he resembles a White Leghorn as well. He has a lot of brown on his hackle that overlays his white but you can't see that in the pics. He and the Dark Cornish make really pretty birds.


Picture of my small flock. Elvis is the only white bird, he is on the top left. Brutus the Barred Rock on the right has his back to the pic. Facing the wrong way, that is a metaphor for his life. lol


A little bit better look at Elvis's face. You can see the Dark Cornish too. I have really grown to love the DC birds which is probably why I favor their stock.

Usually the packing roosters are red star sexlink rooster. (...he looks like on of those...)

Odd I was just thinking that my truck window should be next. Many small chips and when it's cold and the heater gets started in the truck that's when it happens too many trips on 65 and 99. Seems a lot of rocks get to flying on those roads

That'll rattle ya from time to time.
In the Mississippi Delta it seems SO many roads are gravel.
It's kinda weird seein brand new cars with dents and dings and such.

Ok back from work and down from attic unit has been leveled and water seems to be going to condensate lines correctly now. Sometimes things happen for a reason. While in attic I noticed the smell of a gas leak. Small but still a leak so back to the barn grab more tools and crawl back into attic. I'm getting to old for this. Cleaned the filters while I was there as well.

Question for everyone. I just picked up a farm innovators heated chicken mat the other day at TSC. I was curious if that would be warm enough to keep chicks warm in the brooder in place of a heat lamp? I will have a heat lamp on them during the day but at night, I'd like to turn it off, mostly cover the brooder and use the mat instead, only because it's going to be in our bedroom and hubby has a hard time sleeping at night with a light on. Thoughts? I've never used one before and have no clue how warm they actualy get.

one of the users here made a cave with a heating pad and old towels. It was dark and3 the chicks popped in and out as needed.

Home made? I will make a guess and say,, you can or you don't have to.

I have a bator with a fan, and when the eggs go into lock down, the fan still runs. I also have a bator with no fan ever. When the eggs go into lock down, no fan.

Ok. I think I left them running last time. Makes for even heat that way. Just did not want to dry them up too much as the air sacs are fairly large. I'll just keep close eye on humidity
