I wanted to comment on so many more posts...I just knew I'd never make it here if I did.

Congratulations to everyone! Pips and zips and fuzzy bum chicks, ducklings, ducks and lumpy pigeons. I’m loving it! Such fantastic pics….love, Love, LOVE the photos! A picture IS worth a thousand words.
I hope you are feeling better Cynthia.

And Bamadude is awake...lol!
Wet chicks = developmental problems. Thank you for clarifying that. It’s what I was thinking when I had chicks in that state…but I wasn’t 100%. Now I know.

I’ve used Lysol all purpose cleaner as well like Ron. To me, it leaves a rather strong smell.

But it worked well and I’d use it again. I just aired out the bator for a day or so. My bator is styrofoam.
I plan to invest in a Maglite. All the better to see in these (darn) blue eggs…lol!

In all my excitement last night (or rather early this morning) I forgot to update on my progress...lol. I'm officially finished as of this afternoon.
Of the 13 official eggs that went into lockdown, I have 10 chicks. Two chicks died in shell, I eggtopsied them last night. One died a day or so ago (wet chick) and one had pipped through the membrane and was positioned properly...it just didn't make it. That left one egg due today. (Although I had a bad feeling about it)
The chick had pipped and was zipping and was peeping. I was later getting back this afternoon and the humidity had dropped and the chick was dead. The membrane was stuck a bit around on it's head. So I guess maybe things had been different had I gotten back earlier. BUT, I also believe in survival of the fittest...I want robust, vigorous chicks that grow to be low maintenance, healthy stock. Genetics is my thing.
One of the live chicks is crooked...it was from a Crele pullet, so it's a wee tiny guy from a very tiny egg and his neck is bent to the side and he has trouble with his left leg/hip. I'm providing physiotherapy to his neck and between holding him properly last night for a couple hours...and binding him in a paper towel to keep his leg in the proper position and his neck straight (he looks like a wrap, seriously...lol)....we'll see how well it goes

(Probably another pet...lol)

Unofficially I've got two eggs due in three days and 10 more eggs due for the 17th. I candled last night and all ten eggs are a go.

And since this hatch turned out decently...I'm going to take the plunge into getting eggs from a breeder who has some other breeds I'd like to try. We're supposed to be going on a road trip to look buy a yearling bull from a breeder I sourced and the eggs are respectfully close. Since we're 3 + hours away anyways what's another hour, right??)

I'm super excited about new chickens!! I so want to improve carcass quality.

There is a lot in this post! Good job.

Does the chick have Wry neck, also called star gazing? If so it is sometimes a brain injury or a thiamine(or other B vitamin) deficiency. The Baby drops without iron is a treatment.

I have so many chicks! I had to break them into two brooders.

They'd fit right in color wise!

But, I have no luck with ducks. Cattle, sheep, dogs, cats, pigs, rabbits, chickens...I can almost bring them back from the dead.

Ducks...

I tried to save two baby ducks last summer when their mom was predated...they died.

I felt so bad.

I didn't know about this site yet.

I'm better to stick with black chickens...lol (Where are my black chickens???)

It would be the best to leave the ducks in the very capable hands of all the wonderful people who know what they're doing.

(But thank you so much for thinking of me)

They are not big brooders and the brooder plate is rated for 20 chicks.

I set 45 eggs and found some more with cracks and pulled them. There were some clears and blood rings so 37 went into lockdown.

32 of them hatched!

These are out and about eating and stuff.

These are hiding under the brooder getting warm.

This is the second brooder. The chick at the bottom left hatched last and is weak. I think it will make it. He has a bit of a sore naval that I sprayed with Vetericyn and gave it a vitamin drop this morning. Another tonight and I will see tomorrow how things are going.

As a refresher, these are from Whole Foods ant Trader Joe's fertile eggs! 32 our of 4 dozen set.
