Ended 7th Annual New Years Day Hatch-a-long contest number 6 Gingerbread Contest

Here's some inspiration:

This is one of this years winners in the Asheville, NC - Grove Park Inn's Gingerbread Contest. That's where I caught the Gingerbread Bug

"Dicken's Chickens" by Suzanne from Ohio

Their Rules: Except for the base, entries must be constructed of edible materials. The main structure should be at least 75% gingerbread, some of which should be exposed. Edible materials are not limited to candies and icings.

If you want to see some of the others, here's a link:

@sunflour thanks for sharing the picture! I like how they did the little run off the side and it looks like seed (?) around the edges of the base. Very nice!

You're right, I hadn't focused on that, but likely a mixed bird seed - looks like the one we buy for our gals.

I can't figure out how they got the texture on the sheep and chickens - doubt that could be done with Gum Paste, but an overlay of Royal Icing could work.

BTW, this is where I got the idea to do hats for my GB Chicks.

I wonder what they used for the chicken wire. If it had to be edible.

Amazing web site if you havent checked out the video at the bottom, you should.
I tried to figure out how they did that and their rules are edibles only.

All I can figure is that they sell edible "cellophane" for cake decorating - some folks use in GB houses for windows.
And maybe color the royal icing silver or gray ( or mix in silver colored sugars) and take hours and hours to pipe it out to make the wire

. Or use white chocolate and a toothpick :) Once it hardens spray paint it.

Or maybe they cheated

And the judges didn't taste the wire.

Seriously, I think these folks spend so much time in construction that it would be overwhelming to learn how long those works of art really take.

I don't have the link to share, but the Ritz Carlton at Greensboro,GA used to do a human child sized playhouse GB House - amazing to see that in full scale.

If they hadn't roped it off, I would have loved to go inside.

Here's the 2007 GB House at the Ritz Carlton:

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Its makers call it the biggest gingerbread house in the South. What they cannot call it is dietetic. Made of 650 pounds of flour, 300 pounds of sugar, 300 pounds of icing, 20 pounds of chocolate, 65 pounds of assorted candies, and 3,000 gingerbread cookies, this colossal creation isn't likely to be part of anyone's weight-loss regimen.

Now that was an aroma I will always remember

That is super cool!
See and here I was wondering if Royal icing would last 1 or 2 days must have taken weeks to do those! I am in awe! The children's class out did me I am sure. The teens blew me away and the Adults probably would have all felt bad that I dropped mine on the way in

. I cant keep a 4 x 7" roof from collapsing not sure how they do it in feet! Although that might be a ceiling collapse I wouldn't mind being under

Um, it doesn't. At least mine didn't. I checked it when we got home from Cody this afternoon and it's separated. It's in the baggie, sealed off tight, then sealed again within a cup. but I'll betcha I should have refrigerated it. GRRRRRR now in addition to finishing mine I have to remake icing. I did buy some of that gumpasty whatevery stuff today. Dunno what to do with it, but by golly I've got it now!

Off to the shower and then get ready for the girls' dance recital. Have to leave at 6 so I have a lot of frosting and decorating to do ---- to my face -------before I can go out in public! Later, Makers!

My husband wants us to do one entitled "on processing day."
He said we could use a lot of red dye.. I stopped him. I said this is a time to be jolly.
Not macabre.

I think I figured gumdrop chickens out, but I need to go buy different gumdrops.
Not an entry, not my work.

Just to inspire your husband
