8/10 straight run chicks seem to be cockerels...

Straight run is Russian Roulette of the chicken world. lol...

I was pretty lucky, I got 4 straight run from a teacher who hatched for her class. At 10 weeks and 5 days old (as of today) it appears, so far, I was lucky with 3 pullets and a cockerel.

Even sexed birds can be tricky as there is still like a 10% chance they were sexed wrong. I know someone who got sexed chicks (all suppose to be pullets but 3 out of 4 look like they are cockerels).

Introducing a new flock to an old flock just takes patience. I am in the process of doing that now. I have hens that are over a year old. When the babies were about 6 weeks old, I placed them in a wire dog crate outside the run. That way the older hens and babies can see each other. After a week, I moved the crate inside the run with a fence about 4 inches away from the crate. Every few days I moved the fence in closer until I eventually by the 3rd week removed it. Now they are inside the run with no crate, but a chicken wire wall between them. I am just waiting until the babies are close to the hens in size. Once they are, I will allow them together while I supervise. Eventually, I will let them be alone together.

I don't know if that is the correct way to do it, but it seems to be working.

lol, sorry for the novel lol
